i've been advised that joining the NRA and shooting at Bisley might be a good way to get some use out of my new rifle and get more opportunity to shoot in general, but i have only ever shot .22 there and am a bit clueless to any of the other facilities there and if there are any regulations on shooting there

could someone shed some light on it for me?

or is there a better way of shooting at bisley without the NRA membership?

As I understand it you can either shoot there as a private NRA member, or with an affiliated club.

You cannot shoot there (as was explained to me) as a member of an affiliated club on a privately booked target as you would not be there under the auspices of that affiliated club and would therefore not be insured (which you would be if you were under a private membership).

Having damned near been caught out with the above I did look into this....

Either way you need to hold a SSC for whatever you are shooting which will be issued by the club chairman/sec of whatever club you are part of.

To my mind if you want to shoot at private targets at the NSC you should dig deep and be a member, you can gave some good days shooting for quite a modest outlay if a few of you get together and you support the NRA. For all its faults (perceived or otherwise) the NCS wont be there without it so it needs supporting.

If I am incorrect I apologise, Iian WR will probably know a lot better.

Shooter Safety Certificate

A small card issued to you by your club and signed by a committee members which says that you have been checked to ensure you are capable of conducting yourself and shooting safely.

It's a requirement imposed on us by the MOD in order to shoot on any range they are responsible for.

Safe Shooter Certificate? Its a card with a load of boxes on for different types of firearms you need to shoot on MOD ranges, and presumably at Bisley given the above. Your home/main club should issue you with one once you've shown you're safe for whatever type of firearm

ah ok, i don't shoot on MOD ranges, so i don't have one at this time

What's the new rifle or what discipline (type of shooting) you want to do? (sorry if I've missed this)

Suggest joining the NRA and then the NRA Shooting Club - you'll get loads of help and advice and experience of shooting lots of different disciplines. They meet a couple of times a month.

The NRA can also assess you for a SCC.

If you want to do a specific discipline then there might be a better club for you to join as well but I would always recommend joining the NRA first.

hi Karen,

its a C&G 45acp delisle, but i also have 44mag underlever, 577 musketoon, 44 BP pistols, and an fac pump action shotgun. plus a couple of .22 target rifles (so far) so all those would be getting some use if i can.

as for specific discipline, i have just joined the British Western Shooting Society for cowboy action shooting, and would be interested in looking into practical shotgun. other than that, i'm open to most stuff

Don't think they do too much practical shotgun in the NRA Shooting Club but they can certainly put you in touch with the Target Shotgun rep (if he's not on here somewhere already) and there are events and training courses available.

You might be interested in the Autumn Action weekend too at the end of October?

However I would join the NRA and join the Shooting Club - its cheap and fun and you'll get to meet loads of people and work out who can do what where.

Nah, just drive into the main gate and start blatting at anything which takes your fancy from there on in. It's like a safari except with huts and caravans to blaze away at. Extra points if you get the middle of the clock tower! tongueout
