Hi all,

A fair amount if life upheval at the moment, made redundant last month but I have just accepted a new job today. I currently live in the Midlands but will be moving to Inverness.

Does anybody know the local lie of the land when it comes to rifle clubs in that area? I want to chat to a club and just start to map out the logistics of moving into a new area when it comes to my sport. What is it like to deal with Police Scotland etc...I don't want to lose my current ticket but I want to lodge my guns with an RFD for a few months how will the police view that?

Any help would be appreciated

Clubs at Strathpeffer ( ), Cawdor and Tain.

Strath shoots at Cawdor (600m range) once a month and has it's own 25m range at Millnain - halfway between Dingwall and Strathpeffer. Andy632 is the club sec for Strath http://www.strathrifleclub.co.uk/wordpress/.

Don't know much about the Tain club and DW58 csn give you more details about Cawdor Club.

Just ask a bobby they are all tooled up in the Highlands, they must shoot somewhere.

Tain has an indoor 25yd/25m .22 range, plus an outdoor 25yd/50yd range, suitable for .22LR and pistol calibre rifles. Meet on Sat/Sun, and a friendly club. I'm a member there, though rarely go these days, being more involved with other clubs.

If you are prepared to travel, I can recommend the Aberdeen Full Bore Gun Club. They seem to shoot most everything, and have one range complex with both 50m and 100m outdoor ranges (Drums range), plus have access to a 600m range too (Black Dog?). They have some seriously competitive members on the Gallery Rifle circuit.

When I lived in the Highlands, I found the then Northern Constabulary very easy to work with. The same individuals are likely to still be in place, even under the unified service, so I doubt you will find them difficult to deal with. When I moved to the Highlands, I retained membership of the NRA to satisfy the "member of a target club" criterion, and kept my stuff in the NRA Armory for a while, until everything had been sorted out move-wise, and I had found and joined a local club. I kept NRA membership going thereafter, for firearms/shooting insurance, and access to Iain R. for any possible issues that might arise on renewal/variation (good call, as it turned out).

When does the Haggis hunting season start?

Cawdor has its own range about 20 miles SE of Inverness. The range caters for fullbore rifle out to 600yds, Gallery rifle/pistol and benchrest to 200m.

Meets 2-3 Sundays per month all year round, and every Tuesday evening May-October. Cawdor members can also attend the monthly Strathpeffer and BDS shoots so effectively that gives access to the range most Sundays.

Cawdor range from the 600yd firing point - a true highland paradise, but lay in plenty insect repellent or buy a Thermacell.

Hi, I'm biased towards the Strathpeffer club (but then again I am the Secretary); I'm also a member of Cawdor club so that's me well & truly covered for virtually everything that can be shot from 25 yards to 600 yards. I'm also an RFD and would be willing to hold your firearms free of charge until you got everything settled.

On another note, Northern division of Police Scotland are not too bad. One of our members got a variation yesterday in less than one hour!! (.22lbp off, .357 LBR on.) Gotta be a record!!

Aye, but they have their own Range at Daviot.
