I doubt there are many civvie shooters in this country get through enough ammo for this ever to be an issue

I've just got hold of some .223 Hornady steel match to try. See how it goes in the M4.

The Hornady steel match uses lead copper jacket bullets in a steel case. Barnaul on the other hand uses a Bimetal steel bullet with a copper wash.

A Bimetal bullet will in theory shorten the barrel life because of the steel on steel nature of its usage. The steel is a soft variant on the other hand and it should be noted the Russians merrily use the stuff in their military rifles without complaint. Also as pointed out earlier, considering we don't have semi-auto or the ability to buy as much ammo as Americans our usage is more gentle on the barrel as their is more time for the barrel to cool off.

There is an argument in the US that the Russian steel cases damage AR15 extractors but that appears to be more myth then anything else and the Hornady steel case match was developed for Federal training use. There is also a lot of myth making about Laquer coatings but again that is more myth then anything else.

I find when I use steel case there is more cleaning to do afterwards but I can live with that.

I used Hornady steel (casing) match .223 in the USA on a precision rifle course (bolt action).

I've got about 400 if anyone can get them over they can have them cheap LOL! - NOT impressed by them at all. PMC cartidges do a much better round -and a lot cheaper!

He is using that hardness tester all wrong, reading the scale wrong and also using rockwell when on a sample that thin he should be using something like vickers microhardness as the for the force used for HrC or HrB is too high for a sample so thin as it will deform the sample before making an indentation.

We have that exact Wilson hardness tester at work and have a vickers microhardness tester specifically for incoming inspection on steel strip as theWilson rockwell tester is overkill and you can't get a reliable reading onthin material.
