If I'm out hunting (with a legally held firearm on land I've got permission to shoot over) would this be "good reason" enough to have a lock knife on me ?
Someone I know recons he was arrested for such .. I think there must be more to it ...

It would depend on what you needed the knife for and if the officer felt it was justified.

well theres knives and theres knives, if you were using something disproportionate to the task, ie something like
this to skin them, then yes, i could see them taking you to see the sergeant.
whereas if you were using a little 3-4" skinner, then no, i dont think you would be arrested. its a needed tool.
there is of course the guys attitude to be taken into account.... or of course what he answered when the copper asked him why he needed the knife, if he chose poorly then yeah, that might explain it.... or if the cop just isnt up to speed on uk knife law as lots of ppl seem to think lock knives are illegal

As far as I'm aware, as long as the knife isn't accessible whilst you're traveling to the place where it will be used and the knife is appropriate to the task in hand, then you're fine. On private property you can have whatever you wish as long as it's not a band item like a flick knife.

won't make any difference if you can't supply a good reason and convince the officer that that beast is "street legal" good looking knife though.

Come on guys, if you're out legally with a rifle/shotgun on land where you have permission, and you can justify a need for the knife (i.e. hunting) it's highly unlikely that you'll get any grief over a knife of reasonable length and design.
I've stalked/hunted for forty years and never felt the need to carry anything with a blade over 5" in length, I've gralloched/dressed a 34 stone woodland Red Stag with a 3.5" blade and used the same on Wild Boar in Germany and really dispute the need for anything longer than 4-5" unless you fancy yourself as Rambo.
