Just thinking out loud here:

M.A.R.S. action Rifle: Legal / Sect 1
Lever Release / gas operated Rifle: Legal / Sect 1
Pump Action rifle: 'Not legal' / Sect 5

Sorry, what?

How are the first two legal when the third - much harder and slower to operate - is still Sect 5?

Am I going nuts or is that just our firearms laws?

I've head the story behind pump actions being banned is rooted in a meeting between the HO and shooting organisations just after Hungerford. The story goes something like this:

HO bod: "We're banning semi-autos"
Shooting org bod: "That's ridiculous. Won't actually achieve anything. Besides, pump actions are almost as fast anyway"
Clearly flustered HO bod: "Oh, yeah. We're banning them too".

Whether it's true or not I don't know. On the one side it sounds like it would happen in this country, on the other given that "we can't see why a civilian would need such a weapon" was the prevailing view of "certain"* shooting bodies, I'm not sure they would have stuck up that much for them

*You know, that shooting body.

Never!
Really?
Anyone else know why they'd sell out other shooters?

That was the NRA representative and the then Home Secretary Douglas Hurd after Hungerford.

In those days they'd sell out anybody that didn't shoot 10+2 and wear multi-coloured leather bondage gear. Still don't trust them...

An ex friend of mine (you know who you are) and serous shooter back in 1988 said "semi autos are for cowboys and hooligans" and its no loss.....

Really sad attitude, unfortunately he was not alone, many of the Purdy wielding country set thought the same when our handguns were taken away, very sad, our sport was dismembered and whole sections of the shooting community did nothing!

The same attitude was/is prevalent in certain sections of National shooting organisations....

I personally dont take part in or enjoy high end target shooting, but I will fight for the right for others to do it !
