If you are part exchanging one firearm against another is it possible to be granted a temporary permission to acquire the other firearm prior to a variation being processed and granted?, so the new firearm can be collected at the same time as part-exing and avoiding two trips and possibly a couple of weeks/months storage at an RFD.Obviously this would be done in advance and the serial number of the new firearm would be known etc.
Has anyone done this?, or know if it possible?.

Apparently not, I tried the same thing with a shotgun. It's ridiculous that you have to submit, then sit and wait for the variation, then submit your notice of acquisition! Just more work created by an ill conceived system :-(

Yes it is possible and is done by some constabularies but not in the way that you suggest.
They normally put the existing firearm on a temporary permit to allow its retention and vary your certificate to allow the purchase of the replacement firearm. It's done as a favour and cannot be insisted upon.

You'd effectively be getting the variation before you got the variation then?! IF they could do that, why not just do the proper variation in the first place

It's really to accommodate people who need their rifles for work and allows them to exchange on the same day.

I normally put the variation in first so when my FAC is back everything is already in place.

Northamptonshire offered to issue me with a temp certificate so I could exchange a faulty rifle, I don't believe they offer temp certs on any other basis.

If this could be done live, online, it would save so much hassle!

Ah, but then you are taking power away from someone, denying them the pleasure of keeping you dangling for weeks on end...

It's probably the only entertainment they get.
