you're best bet would be to phone your local firearms dept ... they should be able to give you an indication

How long is a piece of string? All depends on their current workload, staffing levels, do they have a 'problem' with sound mods, how well you've filled in your form, which way the wind is blowing etc etc etc.
Could be 3 days, could be 3 months. The mistake you've made is sending your FAC with the variation form. Even though it specifically tells you to do that on the new form i still wouldn't do it if you think you'll need your certificate during that time. Just add a note saying "My certificate has not been enclosed as i require it in my possession for XYZ reason. Please contact me once you have made a decision on the variation and if my FAC requires amendment i will bring it to the HQ and swap the old one for the new one"

South Yorks are still working through a bit of a backlog, plus there will probably be holidays soon too.
My last variation took about 3 weeks if I remember rightly. I did have to call every few days to get it moving though

You might be right Blackstuff :-)
I tried to limit it to twice a day... ;-)

My area warned that they were experiencing a major backlog, but still managed to turn a straightforward variation around in 10 days.
