So I was shooting my '44 pu sniper at 100m and 200m today with Bulgarian light ball surplus.

Starting at 100m, prone but unrested, first shot was dead centre, but one inch over POA. Then the next 19 shots fell within a 14" group. They were taken slowly over around 40mins.I then spent some time plinking at some other stuff with it.

It was now pretty hot, and I cranked the elev
elevation to 2 and nailed with the first shot a 2litre of lemonade. Had a few more shots and then switched back to prone unrested at 100m and put 5 shots rather briskly into about 4.5" group.

I thought groups with these got worse when warming up and hot. Or is this not so uncommon?

You've got a cracked stock. When the rifle's not been fired for a little while the crack opens up and so shifts the position of the receiver in the stock. Your first few rounds hammer the crack closed, hence the point of impact goes haywire as the receiver's in a different position for each round.

After a point the crack has closed up as much as it can do, hence the rifle begins to shoots straight. When you leave it alone, the crack gradually opens again, shifting your POI.

I have a 1939 Izhevsk 91/30 that shoots better when its hot and it certainly hasn't got a cracked stock.

See....thats what ya get when ya use slave labour from Uncle Joes Siberian Gulags to make rifles.

Best choose MN models made by free citizen craftsmen...of the sort that know how to get the best from a bad design & welcome Soviet invaders by providing free dirt naps to save them the rigours of returning home defeated to almost certain exile to a Siberian Gulag rifle factory

Have a look underneath the receiver. I'm not familiar with the Moisin action but if it has a recoil shoulder or other big area that transmits the recoil forces, the crack is probably near to there.

Meh. What psychosomatic describes sounds just like my .22 target rifle, which certainly does have a hairline crack. I have to remember to shoot at least three sighters before going onto the main string!
