virgin coconut oil - cleaner and lube in one?

OK so being a health conscious vegan I really try to minimise my exposure to toxic chemicals. So I began researching healthier alternatives to common solvents and lubes used in shooting. I found several serious studies which looked at coconut oil in industrial machine shops for use as a lube on blades and as a metal cleaner and protector. So I tried some for cleaning my brass. I was seriously impressed. 2 wipes with a cloth which had a teeny amount of oil and then a couple with a dry cloth and they were good to go. Sparkling in fact. They ran smoothly through neck sizing and they smell amazing. Next time you shoot and smell baking macaroons, I won't be far away ;)

He visited while I was cooking steaks not my fault. My steaks are to die for. He came in to the house a Vegan and left with a huge smile on his face after mopping his plate with two slices of bread and butter. His missus took me to one side and said thanks for that at last I can eat real food again.

What's wrong with one shot wax...its earwax anyway :bad:

Mate, if you are worried about this, bin shooting now. I see the vegan aspect but

Lead, various nasties in barrel cleaning products, and Christ only knows what in powder and the residues from it and primers.

Probably the most ozone friendly cleaner is STM tumbling, you don't have to use sea clean and it does the insides as well.

Thinking about it, the brass is probably worse for you than the lube....

AW thanks Maggot! Don't worry people, I'm not one of those whinging hippy types. I gave up eating animal products a couple of years back due to the terrible quality of milk and meat now and the ways its been treated, filled with drugs and chemicals. The food industry is all about profits and share prices. The shortcuts they make are a gamble with our health. Just look at the horsemeat scandal for an idea of how low these companies stoop to make an extra profit. I'm pro hunting and have been a good few times myself. Wild meat that has been taken quickly and precisely, free from drugs and additives. My dog thanked me kindly for it!
Anyhow, coconut oil.. Maggot I realise there are some chemical variables I can't control in shooting such as propellant. However when possible I will moderate risk. I was actually looking for a cheaper alternative to frog lube (which is great but pricey). Coconut oil seemed to fit the bill. I tried cleaning my bolt with it and it worked a treat so I tried it on the brass too. I will buy a tumbler ect at some point but for now the coconut will do very nicely. I urge you to try it as the results were far better than I expected. Hardened old carbon deposits just wipe straight off. It may also be of use to those that are machining metals at home.
