The Archers - lazily smearing target shooters

A forum member sent me this link to an Archers snippet which lazily smears all of us as being akin to drunken Dark Ages louts.
Listen from 12.20 onwards - context is two women nattering about one's new boyfriend.

A. I've just been looking at his Facebook page ... there's some stuff on there I'm not too sure about.
B. Like what?
A. Like all these lairy-looking pics with his mates. Drinking games, and stuff on his wall! Ugh! Some of his friends are back in the Dark Ages.
B. So? We've all got friends like that.
A. And other things like ... (sigh) he's in this gun club. They do target shooting.
B. Well... policemen do that don't they?
Worth writing to Al Beeb about, or just another snipe at us by clueless luvvies?
(I don't listen to the Archers at all, so perhaps the offended bird is actually in a mental asylum or something, I wouldn't know!)

I'd be tended to complain- if they wouldn't get away with it with other minorities ("And other things like ... (sigh) he's in this mosque thing" etc.), why should they think they can with us?

I do hear the Archers and they can be pro-shooting too. One of the actors is a game keeper and you often get him talking about birds, drives, good shoots, &c.
I did find the episode you refer to as rather "odd" though and yes, it deserves a complaint.

I do wish one of the shooting organisations would have the balls to initiate a class action the next time the Daily mail or another media outlet uses the term "gun nut".
If shooters used just a tiny fraction of the legal precedent employed by the race/ discrimination/ compensation industry, I'm sure our sport would be in a much safer position....

Thinking about this.
The person they are talking about is a "Police Officer" who along with other officers and friends shoot at a range/club. So, they are starting with someone who is an "anti-gun nut" and will slowly bring her round to approving of his hobbies. She did not want to go out with him to start, but that has changed and they are lined up for a third date ... maybe there will be positive spin.

That is "listening to the Archers" of the list of indicators of Britishness then.

YES ... my Mother would always listen, my wife does now, so I get to hear it. And to be honest, it is not too far fetched.

I used to be an Archers listener when there was a decent signal for my tuner, but when David married that Geordie tart it all went to hell in a hurlie.
