Anyone got more info on why this happened, seems as though the council thought best to shoot them rather than herd them back to their fields. Maybe this was a punishment for going walkabout...jeez we could be next :roll:

And this was the icing on the cake from a small minded, zealot of a council spokesman..... "The incident may result in court action being taken against the owner of the animals and no further comment can be made at this time’.

Interesting to see what the 'animal welfare' report says. Press have blown it up as usual. What were the teachers/parents doing while the kids were watching the cows getting shot?

Risk assesment would be interesting reading too with kids nearby.

I suspect there is more to this than meets the eye.

As usual people seem to have accidently forgotten how they get meat on their plate. Yes, perhaps not the best way of going about it, but thousands of cows get killed every day, all behind closed doors of course because its so 'barbaric'...

Thankfully this does not appear to be a decision by the Police, or at least not one made in isolation.

Remember at the end of the year when you read the figures re the use of Police firearms and shots fired, at least (I hope it was only 30) 30 are accounted for in this one incident alone.
I did read somewhere that something like 80% of shots fired by Police (out of training) are in the destruction of animals.

One of the payments that Officers use to be able to claim for, was for rounding up cattle, no idea if it is still available, not many 4 legged cows where I work!

Certainly appears to be more to this story than is being reported - perhaps they were English cows?

Yes we kill them every day but there is a time and place for it. Slaughter in an open field, hmmmmm! Kids traumatised, I doubt it if they were in a farming area....must be the most overused word in the English language these days..

If it was the council who were responsible then someone should get his/her jotters and a fricking good law suit shoved up their colon. Why could they not have been hereded onto a truck as they do normally???

Are police firearms officers trained to humanly destroy animals? Do they use a pistol, MP5, or rifle? Are they given expanding ammo? From the picture, I would question the suitability of backstops etc.

Millions of cows are herded every year in this country, are there rules on how far you can move them in go.....doubt it.

As an AFO I was instructed in the law surrounding the destruction of animals, as per ACPO guidelines, but I did not get specific instruction on bullet placement.
However, you have to accept that it would have been a waist of money as the only animals I am likely to come across are feral Pigeons a rat and the new cat!
The county lads will be doing this almost as part of their normal routine, I would be very surprised if they have not been to a abattoir at some point.
I only carry expanding ammunition whilst at work.

I have been in the NRA armoury when RSPCA officers were discussing which firearms to get for bull destruction, it became apparent that they had not been trained and did not know about the dangers of placing the muzzle against the head.

I have worked in both a Sheep and cow abattoir and unfortunately know in the case of cows, that even the slaughter men on occasion mess it up.

If I had been there I would have stood between the cows and the gunghos. Then probably imprisoned. Absolutely disgraceful.
