Scope in the one grand range

Guys and Girls, can I pick your brains for some advice pkease.
I am looking to upgrade the scope on my .308 Remington 700. I currently have a DMP 4-16x56 which has been OK whilst I was starting out but now I want to move onto better glass. I'm looking to spend about 1000 but could spend less or a bit more depending on what's available. Second hand isn't a problem and is actually preferred, I only have one new rifle so that doesn't bother me at all. My shooting is mainly field firing up to 999yds with some gallery at 600. I like MOA, I have an MRAD scope but prefer MOA with Mildots. The rifle has an inclined picatinny rail (20 MOA, does that sound right?)
I was thinking about the following brands but I don't really know much about them. I'm open to suggestions on other makes too in case I've missed any.
Sightron (SIII) - I think a second hand one should be in this price range
Nightforce (our of price range maybe?)
Leupold
Vortex maybe? (I have a 1-4 on the SLR but wonder if the bigger scopes are up to the same quality as the others)
I'm guessing that Schmidt Bender is out on price even for second hand.
Don't want to start a 'my scopes better than your scope' flame war, just want some opinions on what a grand will buy and what's the best for my type of shooting.
Thanks in advance.
