I'm mulling over starting a syndicate to buy and use/rent out a caravan at Bisley. I'm thinking a few members on here probably have experience of this sort of thing - how does renting out a van there work out, economics-wise? Are there any hidden pitfalls to be aware of?

Um you're not supposed to sub-let although a lot of people share vans - for instance I used to share the cost of a van with a smallbore couple as we would use it at different times. Some people do advertise their vans to rent but AFAIK it isn't really allowed. From a long and distant memory I don't think this is an NRA rule and was one imposed by Guildford Borough Council years ago but I would be a bit careful and do a bit of research first.

I think you would be OK with sharing a van with a syndicate as you all know each other (ie some clubs share vans although the site is in one persons name) but advertising it out to others might not go down very well.

And of course I could be wrong as the rules could have changed since I had a caravan.

A friend and I tried to acquire one already there but the guy from the NRA wouldn't allow it.
I wouldn't say that anything untoward was going on but I might think that there was!!

My caravan lease/agreement is explicit in that you cannot sub let. All the same it does go on and the NRA often ask caravan owners if they will let their vans' out to overseas competitors.
If you do sub let ( to cover the annual rent which can be £900-£1500 depending on size) be very discreet about it as leases have been known to be terminated.

You can't just acquire a caravan. There is a waiting list for caravan sites. Just because you may know someone who is giving up a plot, you cannot take it on unless you are on the caravan list and have paid a deposit to be on the list.

OK, so it's a giant can of worms liable to be tipped over my head if someone decides they want to be officious. Another potentially useful idea squashed by red tape.

Doubtless tomorrow's conversation with the range office about a club day to shoot something other than prone rifle will prove to be equally good for my blood pressure.
