Fixed power scopes

We've been looking for a fixed power scope for some time now, to be used on a rifle mainly at 300 but occasionally 600 mards. We prefer a fixed scope rather than one where the lenses move, the image wobbles and the reticle does or doesn't shrink / grow. There seem to be precious few around, particularly at higher magnifications. 6-24 zooms are two a penny (figuratively anyway) but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of x10, x16 or higher fixed power scopes. Suggestions, anyone?

If you want a new one, Sightron do a few fixed mag scopes:
10x42 and 36x42.

Lots of hunting scopes in the 6x42 - 8x50 range available second-hand for not too many peanuts. Everything from Chinese cr@p to European class. Try finding one of the Meopta 7x50's for an excellent scope at reasonable cost.

We have a few second paw Pecars at x6 and a Meopta x7 and we agree, they're good. We'll toddle over and take a peek at the Sightrons, we fancy something with longer legs...

I use a 12x50 Nikko Stirling scope on my 257 - cheap and cheerful but it does the job out to 600m. Not everyones cup of tea but I'm happy with it.

When I first started out a few years back, I bought one of these 10x Leupolds secondhand from a FB-UK member:

Served me very well and even used it at 1000 yards on occasion. If you can find one secondhand, would be worth a look. Appreciate that might be a bit tricky though.

Were you looking the other way when this opti-mate scope sold recently for £165?

get a 16x40 M1 leupold or a variable scope and ignore the variable bit ? (odd question really if you cant trust yourself not to use the variable bit?)

Variability adds mechanical complexity and optical instability. A fixed magnification scope, all other things being equal, ought to be better. And cheaper. We'd thus prefer a fixed magnification scope of magnification appropriate to the task in paw.

I've owned two Optimates, 10x42 and 20x42 and they are great value. I used them both out to 1,000 yards. They had a lifetime guarantee, which I took advantage of twice.
On one scope, the engraved collar on the elevation turret came loose, and Edgar brothers replaced the scope FOC.
The second was my stupid fault, I let the rifle slip and the scope hit the deck, bending a turret. EB shipped it back to Japan and a few months later it returned fully repaired for just the cost of shipping.
I don't think EB sell them any more but a good S/H one is a bargain.
