Hi All,

I'm now looking at purchasing a Mosin Nagant.

I've had a browse of a few in gun shop,
but most look like someone has drilled out the end of the barrel.
There were a few with good looking barrels and mint looking folding bayonets but they suffered from
worn looking stocks.

Maybe I am too picky!

Is £200 a fair price for just the rifle?
But... which one? Where from? How much to pay?

Also, are there "cheap chinese copies" that need to be avoided?

You're being too picky!

On a serious note do you want a carbine or a full size Mosin?.The M38 and M44 carbines are fire breathing monsters that give a very impressive muzzle flash.A full size Mosin will generally be more accurate depending on barrel condition.Do you want an Imperial one or a Soviet era one?.Do you want a Tula or Izhevsk arsenal one?, or Finnish,Romanian etc etc.Pre war Mosins are often better made than wartime ones as are post war ones.With regard to worn stocks.....every mark often tells a story and is part of the history.I have a 1939 Izhevsk 91/30 with a worn barrel that will still put every round in a 6" circle at 100m with ironsights and a mint 1944 Izhevsk M44 carbine with all matching numbers.
Watch out for Mosin sniper rifles as there are a lot out there that aren't genuine as they have repro scopes and mounts fitted and avoid M38 and M44 carbine "snipers" as these were never fitted with scopes.
Chinese versions of the Mosin can be very good but would be scarce in the UK.Check out 7.62x54r.net for everything you need to know and what to look out for as it is a huge subject and remember that once you get one they tend to breed!!!

Ps £200 is a fair price for a piece of history that is rugged and reliable

A quick and dirty alternative to 'recrowning' I believe. My own M44 is the same.

I only paid 120 for my m38 and it's a bit rough. I'd hope £200 would get you a nice example

Do Ryton Arms still do them ?

It was a de-activated Mosin which got me into shooting in the first place, I have read somewhere that they do sell them as section 1 rifles to FAC holders, can anyone verify ? (Yes, I know, I could ring them ... but it's 11pm )

Paul, not sure if it was you who told me about Ryton a few months ago at thurnscoe? I called and they were expecting some 91/30s in that that would leave as section 1. That was just after Xmas.

Ummm, I don't think so ... I only started looking at them myself three weeks ago.
Did you get yours from there ?

No, I was after a carbine and mine came up at Kirklees guns. Must have been another member, he recommended Ryton, said he'd seen a few and they looked great, they were after £125 I think but that may have changed
