Is there an easy way to measure the twist rate of an unknown barrel?

I'm assuming a smith can do it but is there a diy method that is alluding me?

Use a patch of a size that will engage the rifling when you pull it through.

Mark the top of the rod at the barrel. Pull the rod through and when the original mark has done a complete turn, mark the rod again and measure between the marks on the rod to get the twist rate.

I usually do it 2 or 3 times to make sure I get consistent result.

Put a mark, ie a bit of sticky tape or a paint mark, on a cleaning rod at the pawdle end. Slide the rod through the barrel and count how many times the mark rotates in a given length of push. If it rotates once in 8 inches that is the twist rate. If it rotates once in 12 inches, that is the twist rate.
