A gun hotline for people to report concerns over licence holders is hoped to be rolled out in the UK on the back of a one-man campaign to change the law.

The hotline would allow concerned neighbours or friends to ring if they fear for their safety or others around gun holders.

Bobby Turnbull, the lad ostensibly behind the petition, is being manipulated. Not long ago police PR handlers were offering media access to him as a means of drowning out the coroner's report on the Atherton shootings (which found the police were at fault for not enforcing the law), if my memory serves me right. Now I see Gill Marshall-Andrews is scrabbling to get access to him.

I'm not sure whether to write to the paper pointing out the GCN's obvious flaws, which we all know about now. I'm more concerned about Turnbull - seeing his personal tragedy being exploited by determined single-issue campaigners is sickening.

Our "national" bodies should be on top of this like a ton of bricks.

If they don't then they are not representing our interests.

Please read the IPCC report, the multiple failings in the Atherton case were solely due to the Durham Firearms management team not correctly enforcing or adhering to the perfectly adequate existing firearms legislation and Home Office guidelines.

As for Gil Marshall-Andrews and the "Gun Control Network" please do some proper research into them, it's a very small group of rabid anti-shooters who have produced some shockingly inaccurate "reports" on firearms over the years. If she wasn't an MP's wife nobody would give her the time of day."

I've done a little reading around his name. I'm sure he's being used as a front to whip up support for anti-gun hysteria. There was a petition in his name calling for very specific legal amendments intended to abolish section 2 (thus moving everything into section 1). Given that he himself said, shortly after the Durham/Atherton murders, that the police were squarely to blame for not applying the existing law, I don't understand how he could have changed his position without some sustained lobbying, for want of a better word. The quotes attributed to him above are a lot more polished than the interview the Sunday People managed with him two years ago, which suggests he's had media coaching from somewhere.

Desperately sad. I guess he's aware of what's happening, but does he have the full facts?

Seems to be a part of police/establishment policy...not just related to gun laws.

Find a suitable victim/relative of victim as patsy...ideally one that is easily/cheaply manipulated. Educationally challenged? Even better!
Spend a few quid from petty cash on them....food, clothing, dental work, etc....then brief them on "the facts" that lead to the tragedy of which they had direct or indirect experience of.

Then let them loose on the media.

What better way of having new legislative proposals brought to the top of the media agenda?
