How to scrap a barrel.

If you want to re use a action and stock what's the procedure for removing the barrel and disposing of it so you can fit or have a replacement barrel fitted.
Does it gave to go to a gun smith can you remove the barrel your self and dispose of it and keep the action and stock for future use.
Can you cut and chamber the barrel your self then submit it for proof or does it have to be done through a Registered fire arms dealer.
If you remove the barrel can you sell it and keep the action and stock for future use.

It's complicated!

You would need authority to acquire another barrel as it is a pressure bearing part - although a barrel blank isn't and you could have as many as you liked in theory.

Technically once you removed the barrel from the receiver you no longer have a rifle but a barrel and a receiver - so you'd have to get that sorted from an FAC standpoint. However, if you were not changing calibre it would be simpler as nothing has technically changed on your FAC - but you would still have a barrel you're not supposed to.

When I built my 257 I had authority for a .25 cal rifle I then acquired a barrel blank. A receiver came available so I spoke to the RFD and my FEO and got permission to have the receiver and barrel blank added as a complete rifle - which was lucky.

As far as chambering goes yes DIY is possible - I did my 257. Proofing is not required if and only if you are not planning to sell it on at a later date. If you do sell (or gift it) and it isn't proofed then you are committing an offence.

I believe you can get barrel blanks but once they are chambered they become a licensable part. There's a websit, www.riflesinthuk.com that explains how they're made and at what point they become a restricted item.

I see that March Scopes do blanks (https://www.marchscopes.co.uk/index.php ... rk-barrels) and you can also get them from Border (http://www.border-barrels.com/archer.htm) and I'm guessing a whole host of other places too.

Lothar Walther used to be a good call for .22 and personally I would no longer use Border for new barrels.

I had a pretty poor experience with Border when trying to get my .45 barrel, ended up with a Lothar shipped in 3 days.
