Selling a rifle... slots?

So if you sell a rifle, and you inform the police, does the slot it took up open back up to being available automatically, or do you have to do something in order to free it back up?

Say I wanted to sell my HK416 .22 and replace it with a Lantac .22, what would I need to do?

Would i need to put in for a variation?

At what point would I do this? before the sale, after I sold the first one before buying the next?

How does it work?

Inform the police about the sale within 24 hours via email, then letter within 7 days after the sale. Submit a variation within a week or you will loose the slot.

Is there a form, or a correct format for a variation?

Yup, go to your firearms licensing department's website and find the variation form download link.

The forms will be on your local police forces website, download it and fill it out.

When I did my last variation I sent everything in one envelope i.e. variation form, letter confirming sale of firearm and FAC. My new FAC came back within 10 working days with the 2 empty slots ready to go.

If you're not changing the calibre then it would be a 1 for 1 variation and won't cost anything.

Oh, even if you have not found the rifle you are after at the point of sale then still submit the variation form, if you know which calibre you are after then that will do.

If no variation form, no slot. A variation form cost nothing.

Thanks Guys... Guy and girl? you know what I mean...! :p

Just weighing up my options...

I'd quite like to put in variations for more stuff anyway, so need to figure it out. Do you know if you have to pay for mods to be added...?

A variation form cost nothing regardless of old/new calibre.

A mod is a separate slot.

Fine to replace a rifle slot with a mod slot.
