Bisley Shooter Certification Card - Renewal/Up keep

Happy New Year all!

At a recent shoot at Bisley we overheard one of the NRA instructors mention that he was taking some NRA club members back through their certification as they had not shot for a good while.

As usual, at the time, it didn't really register but having thought about it - can the SSC lapse?

I'm a NRA Shooting Club Member but now shoot with another club (who are registered as my main club). Do I need to to do a NRA club shoot to keep current?

Regardless of which is the main club, should I also keep the NRA computer log up to date?

Any thoughts/experience welcome as I'm not clear on this.

I am a member of the NRA, and an NRA afilliated club, but not a member of the NRA shooting club.

Its down to your club sec/chirman to police this, but to be fair I always log my use on the NRA system when I am not shooting with my afilliated club (and even when I am) as if checked it will all be there.

It makes sense one way or another to keep some sort of record, particularly if you re-load.

I keep score sheets for anything against plottable targets, I scan my load test targets into my PC (Good practice in any event if you want to look at load data down the line), and I keep an up to date log sheet on each batch of cases....and my clubs keep records of when I shoot.

My understanding is your SCC will elapse if you have not shot with the NRASC, are an RCO or have shot in a competition at Bislely in the previous 12 months. The good news is you do not need a Bisley issued SCC as your club SCC (Assuming they issue them) is valid at Bisley.

Yes, always log your shooting activities on the computer in the range office when shooting at Bisley

This reminded me of an interesting anomaly with the Bisley issued SCC. A competition shooter could decide to take a year off the circuit, still shoot twice a month at Bisley which is their primary club and at the end of the year be refused an SCC without a re-test.

Am I wrong to assume this?

I have to admit I have got out of the practise of logging shoots on the NRA log - but i do keep a separate diary for reloading so I'll retrospectively enter those.

Whenever I am writing to my FET, I always right something along the lines of

"I continue to be an active NRA member as can be evidenced by my shooting record held by the NRA"

The record covers me should they ever ask for evidence that I am still an active shooter etc.

Also, as we are a small club, we encourage all our members who are slso NRA members, to list the NRA as their orimary club. This makes the club secretaries job a lot easier and does not affecr shooting certificates in any way.

Please may I take this opportunity to remind everyone that the responsibility to record members' shooting activities rests with the club, not with the member. Therefore, if you, as an individual NRA member, shoot at Bisley and do not record your activity, you are putting the NRA at risk. You are also putting the NRA official responsible for such matters (me) at risk. This has two corollaries. First, I am aware that our current system is not as user-friendly or as robust as it might be, and I am thinking about alternatives to make it simpler for us all. Second, if I catch anyone failing to record their shooting I will fall on them from a very great height pushing a stack of leftover Bisley Bibles ahead of me.

The NRA sets a variety of standards for renewal of the SCC, mostly because we are much too big an organisation to rely on personal knowledge of individual abilities reaching up to the Sec-Gen. If you really haven't done any of the things it takes to get a new one for nothing, and you really don't have another club to sign you off, we only charge £15 for a professional member of staff to take the time to check you one-on-one.

Is that £15 per dicipline or for all diciplines that the member shoots?

£15 all in, I understand (having examined TR / Scoped / Gallery in one session), though if you want Moving Target or Black Powder or Heritage Pistol it may be that Membership (who run this stuff) will ask for more because of the need for specialised facilities / equipment / time. OTOH if you are doing those and haven't got a free tick, maybe one should ask some questions anyway? I don't know that level of detail. Ring Nick on ext 138 (I'm off on holiday for a few days).
