Moderators ("silencers"): what do you use, or want ?

Do any of you use an effective moderator?

If so, what type ?

What calibre is it ?

How heavy is it ?

How heavy a moderator would you tolerate?

Do you like reflex moderators?

What maximum diameter would you accept for a moderator ?

How much would you pay for an effective moderator ?

Don't have one at the mo but an exact copy of a Russian PBS for the AKM would be nice.

An olde Maxim 1910 or 1914 will do very nicely for my M1903A4....ta very much

Yes, I use a few suppressors and one is very effective. It is something I worked on with OLC, is 300,0mm long reflex type, stainless front end and aluminium back with stainless tube core which gives a significant weight saving and excellent heat dissipation, mine is the prototype and a tad over 1kg, production versions are lighter. It is very effective and quite capable of repeat shots without heat issues and I routinely use it to 1200 yards.

I don't have tons of experience with moderators.
The only one I use is this Vulcan 5,56 that screws over the flash-hider of my AR in seconds.
It is quite heavy, 620 grammes with a length of 125 mm protruding from barrel for an overall length of 160mm and a 40 mm diameter, obviously completly changing the balance of the rifle. It compares well with what seems to be the norme for that type of moderators including the uber expensive B&T.
There is a French Cie, RDS Vortex, that makes one of the same size of my Vulcan for a weight of only 460 grammes but it costs nearly twice as much as the Vulcan retail px ...

I was shooting on a range that had "difficult relations" with the neighbours . We were advised to use moderators and to encourage us to do so, a very competetive rate was offer . The only reason why I got it. This Vulcan is very efficient in that respect.

I have 4 moderators, 2 Wildcat Preadator 8's in .30cal and 2 of Dave Mercers DM804's in .22rf and .30cals.

The predators are very "flexible" with interchangeable threaded bridges and various tube lengths so can be used on several rifles, I have one with an 18x1 metric thread and the other is a 5/8" x 24tpi, I can change threads and lengths in a couple of minutes saving me having to buy another moderator for the next rifle I buy.

Would you be happy with :

length = 300mm (reflex style)

weight = 1200g

diameter = 50 mm

material = titanium

At 300,0mm you should be a lot lighter in titanium, probably closer to 800 grams and I would be inclined to use stainless blast baffles. Also take care on the grade of titanium as it might fracture with continued use which is going to be annoying at best and probably dangerous as well.

Really it is down to the application, if it is for a single shot with a follow up shot and pack away that is fine, extended use with titanium could be iffy....
