If I want to swap a rifle rather than add does that fall under a variation? I would also like to increase amount of rounds I can purchase and hold as I was very conservative originally. Any advice appreciated.

you can't just swap, you have to have a one for one variation, this is free, at the same time you can ask them to increase your holding, I can't see any reason why they would charge for that either.

If you're swapping one of your firearms to acquire for another type/calibre, then this would be a free one-for-one variation. If you want to change the requested ammo hold/acquire amounts at the same time, this would also be a freebie.

If you're disposing of an already held rifle, you'll have to notify the police of how you've disposed of it/who you've sold it to within 7 days of doing so. You can then request a new slot to acquire another rifle without adding to your total (and as such will be a free one-for-one if also done within the 7 days - if you wait beyond this, it'll be £26).

Is this correct if so its going to cost me a fortune to reclaim the slots for the rifles I have sold over the last few month.
I am racking my brains I might be wrong but I don't re call ever having to pay for a one for one variation.

Alpha if you have a look in the guidance to police document it says that in order to apply for a free one for one slot to replace a firearm that has been disposed of you need to apply within a certain period of time or you will loose that "slot". Some forces apply this rule rigidly and others not so rigidly.
It is therefore advisable to apply for a one for one variation immediately that you dispose of a firearm, even if you do not intend to replace it immediately.

Also Alpha the fee if charged would for the variation not per additional firearm that you want to put on a firearms certificate.

...sadly, even though the old Lothian & Borders force assured me that they did not use the guidance to police document, they did insist on variations within 7 days

I did successfully challenge them on this the first time they said I'd need to pay, as I could find nothing in writing anywhere stating that 7 days was the legal time limit

Durham once let me do this 5 weeks after i sold a rifle but i was told i was 'lucky' to get it for free. However as Chapuis has said, you'd only need to pay the one fee of £26 for all of the variations you want if you do them all at the same time

I have just checked my local licencing web site no were on there can I find any reference to having to apply for a variation within 7 days. I am going to test them with four one for one variations.
