If you put a rifle in to a gunsmith for work to be done to it, and the rifle is then absent for a very protracted period of time, what is the best course of action?

Check your contract. You did get a contract drawn up?

Contact the gunsmith?

Let's say this work was only scheduled to take a month or so, so there's no written contract.

The gunsmith, in our hypothetical situation, insists he'll be done "soon". This has been the general gist of his responses for many months now. The work being done does not need this length of time to complete.

The rifle in question is still on the owner's FAC. The gunsmith's register shows the rifle was booked in for work to be done on it.

What's the next wise move?

Next wise move? If whomever wants the work doing, then wait. If whomever is pi$$ed off, go get the rifle and get the work done by someone else.

What's really the issue?

Simply collect from the gunsmith if he is unable to state clearly when the job will be completed and take it elsewhere. You should have been issued with a receipt stating terms and conditions when you left the rifle with the gunsmith. I believe that this is a recommendation made by the gun trade association and BASC so that ownership of firearms can be clearly established in the rare event that the dealership closes suddenly for any reason.

Depends on the gunsmith.

The one I use has an excellent reputation.

I never need a contract and he delivers on time or faster.
