and think it might be a better option than trying to convert our P14 to fire 7.62x54R. It's a Finnish TKIV-85, a sniper rifle in 7.62x54R that was the precursor to the Sako TRG.

How simple is it to re-barrel a Mosin Nagant? We're thinking a Joe West stock, a MN1891 action and a nice heavy stainless barrel.

I thought they were chambered for the Finnish 7.62x53R cartridge,

They are. Originals being pretty scarce, we were thinking of taking a standard MN and putting a heavyweight stainless barrel on it. It wouldn't be an exact copy of the real thing,

We have always believed 7.62x54R is capable of excellent accuracy ...

I'm willing to bet that the Finns converted M28/30s to make those. No need to rebarrel.

You beat me Kennyc! That is a Moss Pawn build on the Iraqveteran8888 Youtube channel. They have done more then one as I understand it.

AS I understand it the 7.62x54r cartridge is regarded by Lapua of Finland as an inherently accurate round There are a few American examples of rebarrelled on the internets and Youtube.

I have certainly considered it as an interesting idea for a project, the rifle for the moment is widely available and cheap as chips so there is no worry about cutting up some rare antique. I suppose if a gunsmith can put a new barrel on a Remington 700 why not a Nagant!

Perchance we should ask ovenpaa if something like this is within his capabilities and have one built as a forum project...
