A Whippet is hardly Rabbit sized. We have a Weim and given his colour and size I was always wary of walking him past the woods when he was younger and they were shooting. He was for ever working the edge and a minor distraction was enough to have him crashing through the undergrowth and at a distance he would have looked like a small Deer.

The article nicely avoids stating exactly where the dog was though. Was it on the Golf Course or in the owner's garden?

In the garden; then it should be taken further. Running loose on the Golf Course; a different situation.

A whippet is very different in stature to a Rabbit or a Muntjac regardless of shot location or distance.

Surely you take the time to correctly identify your target before ventilating it?

nope, no difference! a whippet is a considerably larger than a rabbit,so misidentification is a non starter, if it was mistaken for a fox, then the shot was taken at eyeshine and not at an identifiable target, and on a golf course you don't even have the excuse of protecting livestock, this guy deserves to lose his FAC let alone his permission!
