Guns to be sold by dealer

Three years ago I left a rifle (Anschutz 22mag with Match trigger, 3 magazines, fitted scope and case) with an RFD and asked him to sell it for me as I was moving away.
Just found out today after many visits these past years that it went to auction. This despite previous visits asking what had happened to it.
I'm a tad miffed as I would rather have donated it to a club or friend than have it go to auction and sold (most likely) for buttons. I reckon the dealer should have advised me that he was going to send it to auction before doing so.

Opinions anyone?

You asked them to sell it. Sold is sold whether it be by auction or otherwise. Don't mean to sound blunt but that's my opinion.

Google search the serial number, and see if an online auction listing existed.
I would be looking for assurances, backed up by something in writing that the dealer had definitely sent your rifle to auction.Otherwise the dealer could just fob you off with less paid out claiming a poor price realised on the day and about two different commissions.

Charlie....
Maybe he sold it to recover storage fees.
Was it Tom Y by any chance?

If it was then that explains it - that guy's tighter than two coats of paint!

No wasn't TY. it wasn't in storage it was meant to be on gun rack for sale as I had given up my FAC at that time
Sold and auction are different.
Auctioneers just receive bids, they d not sell guns or anything else.
At any rate it's not as if he tried to contact me despite numerous call ins because it's taken me ages to find THIS out!.

No won't name for now...we'll see the outcome but I know I will be unhappy

.
As I said, selling the gun means selling from his shop - not giving it away to an auction house whose sole job is to get bids in and accept the highest, no matter how low.
Common courtesy would have been a phone call to say it wasn't selling and if it was OK with me it would go to auction or I could make other arrangements. Not as if it's a big shop! At any rate it's taken me a long time to get this far and actually find out what happened to it. I have called in on the shop almost every time I have been in the UK and asked for an update that never came, so it's not as if I am asking after three years absence.
Oh and I can say the name as long as I do not cast aspersions on them, all I am doing is outlining fact here.
