SCATT zeroing issues

#1 Post by gw280 »

I train with a SCATT machine indoors, but I've been having some trouble with the zeroing/calibration procedure for a while now.

I'll start off with the normal zeroing procedure, where I take the single shot in calibration mode and it'll calibrate the machine to be in the right ballpark. Then, I'll take a few normally traced shots in sighters mode, adjust my sights, then take my string of "scoring" shots. This generally works fine at the start, with my trace "knot" tightly bunched up on the X ring on a 1000x palma target, which is what I'd expect. However, once I break position, then come back, it seems to be overly sensitive to that and instead of the trace being centred on the middle of the target, it'll centre at a different location (normally in the 9 or 8 ring somewhere).

I understand that this is being caused by me not coming back into position in exactly the same spot, but my sight picture is the same between shots, and the muzzle of the rifle is maybe only 1cm different in terms of distance to the target than it was before, if that. Cant is also the same as I have a spirit level on my foresight that I level up with each shot. It's also definitely not been this sensitive to change in the past. My theories are that it's due to a change in location (I moved flats a couple of years ago, and now shoot across a semi-reflective hardwood floor instead of over non-reflective carpet, which could be screwing with the sensor), or due to upgrading the SCATT software.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I'm not *hugely* fussed for the time being as I prefer to examine the trace itself along with my trigger technique (and thus fall of shot from the centre of the trace) rather than the absolute position of the trace on the target diagram, but it'd be nice to get this sorted.

Have you tried asking the manufacturer or agent?

I seem to remember Gaz Morris uses a SCATT system so hopefully he will see this post however you could also drop him a PM. Rox might use one as well, not sure though.

I used to use one, and I remember similar behaviour. I'm sure that, as you surmise, displacement of the muzzle is the cause, and in particular lateral displacement (left or right across the mat) which is harder to identify. This will effect the triangulation of the point-of-aim, and when you consider that an ICFRA/Palma long range bull scaled to 10 yards is 5mm across, a variation in muzzle position of 1cm is significant - even more so if you are closer than 10 yards.

If you want to see the group centered then either calibrate every time you rebuild your position, or use the 'auto-group-centering' setting, but remember that ultimately these systems are not about points and score.

Thanks for the advice. I found the following information on the SCATT website which seems to cover this issue: http://www.scatt.com/faq/12/faq/#2 ("At trainings in prone position, the average point of hits floats. It may can occur from the signal, reflected by floor")

I will try it out and see if it makes a difference.
