Hi all,

Are there any legal requirements governing how powder & primers are kept?

Should they be under lock & key in a similar way to live rounds?

no , just a dry place ,only blackpowder needs to be stored in a secure wooden box.

I think most people store them separately (from each other) but other than that it's pretty much up to you where you store them. I have most powders on or under the reloading bench, primers in the gun safe compartments and loaded ammunition is kept completely separate in its own safe.

I have always kept my primers in the ammo safe, I don't think it's a requirement it just seemed logical to me

Basically, it makes sense to keep powder, primers and loaded ammo separate.

I keep my primers and powder in the same lockable wooden chest however they are in separate compartments. One thing I would suggest is never ever keep powder in a steel container of any form and I personally would not keep my primers in a steel container either however that is a personal opinion only.

Isn't there a maximum limit of power that you can store as well?

15Kgs and that includes powders, loaded rounds and shotgun cartridges plus primers which are allocated something odd like 0,07 grains per primer certainly not enough to make a serious impact on your holding until you get to serious numbers.

Blimey,

Thanks for all the replies.

Didn't realise there was a weight limit which included shotgun cartridges!

Could you tell me where that is specified please?

I've no idea how many shotgun cartridges I have in the house but it's a lot!

I thought i was asking a numpty question, glad I asked now.

To take you up to the limit say each cartridge had 25 grains of powder in it you could have 9240 cartridges ,That's powder alone and not primer content included (that would be 42 grams of high explosive)..
