M79 Grenade Launcher

I was thinking about the M79 Grenade Launcher (aka Wombat Gun  ) and how much fun it was to shoot although carrying it was a PITA!

So I looked up the dimensions and realised it meets the 12/24 rule for S1 firearms, 14 inch barrel and 28.8 inches OAL. So I began to wonder about the feasibility about making a replica. It would have fire shotgun ammunition or similar as it otherwise it would be S5 due to the ammunition.

I know it's probably an unrealistic project, if for no other reason than getting the furniture, sights etc would be nigh on impossible but it's sometimes fun to wonder what could be possible with the time, money and skills!

It would need to be rifled to comply with the 12/24 however you could always build it as say a low velocity 18mm slug rifle with a sleeve around the barrel to make up the diameter. The sights are not so difficult.

A single shot, shot gun can comply with the 12/24 rule - only pumps and semi need to be at least 40 inches OAL for S1. In any case I was thinking of it being rifled for solids, however I remembered a product that has potential - http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/a ... x?a=502765

Pop a golf ball in, insert a blank cartridge and suddenly golf becomes fun - who would have thought that was possible! clapclap

Duh, I forgot it was single shot. Well why not build one with two barrel options, a rifled version for slug and a smooth bore version for bean bags, golf balls and the like, add a quick change latch to swap and you are well away.

Salut ,

What will you use it for ? Have u found a rustty old tank and you want to go lobbing grenades down the range at it ?
It sounds like a daft idea , but on the other hand it does sound fun ....

If so have you thought about getting yourself a Mas49/51 or a 56 & couple exercice grenades ? :good:

Mmmm...good idea. sign92

I originally thought just to ML the golf ball and have the breech chambered to take a blank round (would it still be considered a firearm?) and then did some searching and found that a 1 bore cartridge is almost the perfect size for a golf ball and a squash ball is 40mm in diameter - that would smart! :o

Froggy,
There's no rhyme or reason to it, other than a bit of nostalgia and fun - I could happily while away the hours lobbing golf balls down range! :good:

A 12/24 S1 shotgun would require a 'good reason' to own and AFAIK the only good reason to own a short shotgun is for cowboy/end of trail shooting, i'm no historian, but i think you'd struggle to convince the authorities you'd be using it for that! emrolleyes

Rifled might be a go-er though :good:

You mean "for playing golf" wouldn't be a good enough reason! :run:
