How many times can cases be reloaded?

#1 Post by meles meles »

Assuming the use of moderate price brass, let's say something like Privi, how many times could one reasonably re-load and re-use cartridge cases ? For the sake of argument, let's assume the cases are being used in a bolt action rifle, and are downloaded to fire cast boolits at moderate speed at ranges up to 300 yards rather than being hot loads designed to pas through a King Tiger at a mile...

I'm no expert, but the one point I would make is that if the cases are used in the same gun every time, and for that reason are minimally neck-sized only, they will last much longer than if they are being full-length sized every time for use in any gun.

I have .308 Lapua brass that has seen 10 reloads without annealing, all I did was neck size and trim to length occasionally. The brass has been retired now but still stops on the shelf 'Just in case'

Lapua is a little upmarket isn't it compared with Privi?

The cartridges we have in mind will be used repeatedly in the same gun and no others. We hope they'd last more than ten shots.

With low pressure cast boolit loads - 20 or more loads are easily obtainable.

Not so sure about low loading to save on case wear? - What is the difference between under loaded & low pressure? & when does an under loaded round become dangerous as it fails to expand / obscurate the case to the chamber & form a seal?

The answer is 'it depends'. Prvi will not do > 10 reloads I expect, with my f/tr loads I might get 2...

Usually several grains over book max!

A .308 case so stuffed with N540 that the people next to you wished that it was a trend that had stayed 'down under'.
