An elderly gentleman in my local small-bore club has a problem and has asked me for help. He shoots right handed, but being blinded in his right eye quite some time back he uses his left eye with offset sight mounts. His left eye is now slowly deteriorating to the extent that his shooting is suffering badly and he fears he will have to stop. By chance one of our members was shooting smallbore bench rest, the gentleman in question looked through the 'scope and saw that with a 'scope he would be able to continue his shooting for a while longer - but the scope would have to be offset to his left eye.. He has asked me to consider whether this is at all feasible, and if so to make the necessary mounts. Clearly there are some quite difficult problems to consider especially the weight of a 'scope offset by over 2". Rather than re-invent the wheel I am initially looking for past experience. Has anybody seen or done anything like this before?

Your elderly friend is not alone.

A friend of mine also has a problem with his right eye so he uses an offset scope mount. I will ask him to send me some pictures. Its a simple thing to make, basically fit ali plate onto a suitably milled scope mount and then mount another rail on the plate. Alignment errors can be compensated for with windage ( within reason :-) ) . There is probably some loss of rigidity, and a limit to the size of scope that it will support. Someone with more mechanical aptitude could probably devise a more rigid solution, and certainly a more elegant one

I have just such an affliction ! Although I am lucky enough to be able to shoot my Marlin from either shoulder ( I am right handed but blind in my right eye) when shooting from the right shoulder I can position my left eye behind the scope, I cannot do this with my 22 rugger clone as the stock does not seem to allow me position my head in the same way as the Marlin.

I bought a one piece scope mount from flea bay which has rail segments arranged so that torches or other stuff could be mounted around the scope and I use this to offset the scope. When I can find the cable to connect my camera to the computer I'll post a photo

this is not a fix as such, however we K31 owners are no strangers to scope offset, if you can sort out the technical bits it works very well, this is my offset scope

I have a similar problem and have built a home made offset scope mount. I'll post a picture later when I'm on my laptop, in the meantime try google image search for "offset scope mounts" that's where I got my ideas from.

Ok the franken-scope mount, however it's been modified since this picture as the scope was too high. The plate is now under the brackets. The hard part is getting the amount of offset correct, it was trial and error but it's around 65mm or so. The other was to build in some adjustment to windage by having some lateral movement in scope rail. I'm right handed but with impaired vision in my right eye, having always shot from the left shoulder it's a bit weird shooting right shoulder. Hope this helps

If for smallbore, simplest is perhaps to have made a bracket in the form of an angle, adapt the horizontal wing for the scope fitting holes (or dovetail) of the action, and fix on the vertical wing dovetailed standard scope mounts, or have the dovetail directly milled in the plate.

Then, suffice to turn the scope 90° in its standard rings, and everything is done......

We have done that here long ago, but I have lost track of the rifle with such modified system and cannot have a pic of the rifle taken

Well done everybody, it appears that the problem is not as unique as I thought and solutions have already been proven. It just shows what a fount of knowledge this forum is!
