We were discussing modern hunting rifles for use in the UK this morning, specifically new rifles available on the UK market. My guess is the market share is held by Tikka and Sako for new rifles, does anyone have a different view on this?

Steyr do some dedicated hunting rifles, not sure about how much market share they have. Would have thought the Remington 700 would get a few hunting sales as well. Do know a couple of people that use AIs for bambi

Our discussion was centred around Schultz & Larsen and why more people were not using them for stalking. I had not considered an AI as a stalking rifle however looking at the original design use I am inclined to retract my words :lol:

If you can afford and carry an AI, then I can't think of a more reliable and durable rifle for hunting - But I was watching someone yesterday with a what looked like a very lightweight and short barreled Remi 700 drilling the V-bull at 600 yards...

Upper end is dominated by Sako, then tikka, remington, cz, howa, savage and styer being the more common ones.

My stalking rifles need to be light enough to carry for extended periods and capable of cold barrel accuracy. I am not shooting strings so a sporter or lightweight barrel is ideal.


My foxing rifles have shorter heavey profile barrels. I have sako, remington, tikka and savage in the cabinet as hunting rifles.

All have synthetic stocks.

Just about sums it up as regards the most popular makes except you forgot to mention Blaser, Sauer and Browning and a few others. Contrary to what has been said AI are not that popular as a stalking rifle because most of the other makes that have been mentioned are much better suited to the task. They may be a reasonable tactical/sniping rifle but they aren't the most suitable rifle for stalking.

Is there any reason why Schultz & Larsen do not figure in the list of rifles used here in the UK, is this down to availability or price or something else?

Availability I would say, they haven't been marketed as actively as most of the other makes also their high price comes into it. Any one who has used one won't have any doubts as to their quality.
