Anyone here know the ins and outs of the bsa century rifle because ...
Thinking I was doing a good thing I took the bolt out of one of the club rifle I normally shoot (a bsa century) cleaned it, took the back off the bolt and cleaned all the crud off .. I cleaned said rubbish out of the breech and squirted a little bit of wd40 into the trigger ..Now here's the problem .. After i put it back together about 1 shot in 10 has the following issue .. Rather than being nice, light and crisp the trigger seems REALLY heavy with lots of creep .. More alarmingly if you partially pull the trigger and then open the bolt the rifle will fire !!! Wish I had left well alone now !!
Any suggestions as to where to start ?

WD40 is very good at doing what it was made for, displacing water after that if left in place it becomes a thick resiney goo clogging all it touches.

Firstly I'd drop the trigger group from the barrel and give it a good soak, scrub and rinse it white spirits or diesel in case that WD40 loosed a piece of crud, lightly OIL the moving parts with a good gun OIL like ATF and see what difference if any that makes, if nothing else it will get that bloody WD40 out of the mechanism. I'd also check the bolt reassembly.

I would recommend that you get over to the HARC website as it has copies of the Century instructions and diagrams, a post on their forum could solicit a response although it seem to have been moribund for a while.

A kind fellow member of my club has taken the bsa to bits, cleaned all the crud out, cleaned and lubed the parts and put it back together .. It now shoots perfectly every time .. The accuracy is all over the place tho .. He said this isn't uncommon with a newly cleaned .22 barrel and it should settle down ..
I've learned a lesson !!

And the lesson is?

If its not broken .. Don't try and fix it !!
(Oh .. And wd40 isn't good at cleaning guns !

How many rounds is it likely to take for it to settle down and get accurate again ?
