Question. Should you be a club shooter what would you reckon the most popular calibers would be that factory ammunition would be bought in? And with this, considering the cheapest factory ammo around, except for importer deals now and again, appears to be Privi, running at around 40 quid for pistol and 70 for rifle, for a 100 rounds.

So, really, if we had again a "Howitzer" manufacturer again, for those that remember them in the pistols days, what would you be looking for? Now we're not talking about match grade, custom ammo, but reliable, accurate fodder for the club shooter.

What say you all?

223 (55gn) and 357 Magnum would do me. Except for 45-70, everything else I shoot is a bit too exotic for cheap and cheerful club ammunition.

That's tricky because if I try to get ammunition up here, myself, shipping is a factor. For factory ammunition I can't compete with the buying power of an RFD, which is why I reload.

This weekend, Andy has some 223 for sale to club members @ £5/20 and £6/20 which is fantastic and I'll buy as much as I can.

PPU 223 (55gn) is £50.30/100 and 357 Mag is £42.80/100. If I could get it at those prices up here then I'd be a happy shooter. I suppose in answer to your question anywhere between £10-15/20 would be an improvement to the £20/20 that is the cheapest 223 ammunition my RFD sells.

Our current club prices for plinking ammo are as follows:
£5 per 100 .22 Blazer (or £4.60 Centurion)
£21 per 100 .38 special
£21 per 100 9mm
£30 per 100 5.56
£43 per 100 7.62
we don't mark up to make a profit hence the members benefit but we do buy sensible quantities, that's what I'd expect to pay, what can you get ?

Some of us older shooters can be traumatised by prices such as those you quote. The only ammo I buy is .22 and I don't shoot much of that so a 500 round brick will last more than a year. The two or three thousand rounds a year that I shoot in full bore calibres are all hand loads with home cast bullets. My lack of familiarity with factory ammo prices comes about because I have never bought any: mind you, I have only been shooting for fifty years or so, there is still time!

9mm - <£20 would be a bonus at the moment , but i think the actual value is more like £12/15 per 100
.223 - Up until last year i could buy milsurp ammo from several RFD's in the NE for <£7 / 20, now i'm lucky to get it <£10
.308 - Same as above but <£8 previously and more like £11 now

OK, a little more out of the bag.

A bloke I know, OK a mate, who is thinking about getting into some small scale ammo manufacturing on a comercial basis. Gallery rifle is going to be his primary push, perhaps with some popular rifle calibers later.

What he is actually thinking of is;

.38 Spl, 125gn LRNFP
.38 Spl, 158gn LRNFP
.357 Mag, 158gn LRNFP (Cowboy load)
.44 Mag, 200gn LRNFP (Cowboy load)
.44 Mag, 240gn LRNFP (Cowboy load)
.45 Colt, 255gn LRNFP

Later, perhaps,

.223 Rem, 62gn FMJ
.308 Win, 155gn FMJ
.303 Brit, 174gn FMJ

Pistol calibers he's looking around reatil of 35 quid a 100 and rifle of 60 quid a 100. At the minute all fag packet maths with quotes from suppliers.

His idea is that they will all be hand loaded (Dillon machines), in the UK. Provide club shooters with reasonably priced, good quality club ammunition for us average club shooters and training ammo for the big competitors.

So really the question is, if this sort of thing was offered, would it be attractive?

Personally would love to see .45/70, 7.5x54, 7.5x55 and .303 manufactured.

For .357Mag would be happy to pay around £30-35 per 100, rifle ammo, most dealers seem to retail Prvi around £65 at the moment, so £50-55 per 100 would have me (and most likely many others) biting his hand off for it.

Got to say commend him for going into this its good to see a shooter willing to take a leap like this
