I have just completed my first web site for my shooting club. Some minor tweeks required and the creation of a members forum.

I agree - it's bright, clean and easy to navigate with the important links in the right places,

A couple of minor points: On my screen the heading and picture is squashed so it looks a bit unsightly, and the site is cramped into the middle of the page in a small font which may make it unreadable for those with poor eyesight.

Personally, I think every shooting club should have a website like this. We need to get our sport accepted for what it is - a safe, responsible, enjoyable sport rather than the a training ground for murderers as so many people still believe. The web is a cheap and (relatively) simple way of doing this; let's face it, if you haven't got a web presence nowadays, you don't exist!

It's a good idea to have a "launch date" for the completed site then e-mail your local newspapers to anounce this launch - it all helps the "normalise" our sport, and it brings in members as well.

"Dundee Rifle & Pistol Club started over 20 years ago and has continued to grow to become the premier club of its kind in Dundee and Angus.

We have a dedicated 25m outdoor range near Forfar and also have access to the M.O.D. facilities at Barry Buddon ranges for full bore shooting. We organise a shoot at our own range at the end of each month and generally have access to a range day at Barry Buddon once a month although this is shared with two other local clubs and is dependant on current M.O.D availability.

Strong links existing with other local clubs and inter club competition are a regular feature in the summer months with some members also attending events further afield in Scotland and at Bisley.

The club is keen to encourage new members and help develop their skills in the sport and welcomes enquiries from anybody interested in shooting."

"The club shoots a number of different disciplines both informally and at competition level.

Full Bore shooting takes place at the M.O.D ranges at Barry Buddon just outside Dundee. Shooting takes place from 100yds up to 600yds and occasionally out to 900 yds. Members shoot a variety of different rifles from Black Powder Muskets, vintage military rifles, stalking rifles and custom built long range competition guns.

At the club range we shoot a number of different types of firearms. Black powder revolver is a lot of fun and very popular amongst members. Lever action rifles are ideally suited to the range and are traditionally of pistol calibre and are used in inter club competition with a turning target system. Also used at the range and in competition are small bore rifles typified by the Ruger 10/22. Occasionally a small clay pigeon layout will be set up for some variety.

The Club competes during the summer months in the N.E.S.S.C. Competitions which are organised between several clubs in the North East of Scotland and are run for Lever Action & Smallbore Rifle. These are well attended, great fun but with a real sense of competition!"

I knew the pictures were too cramped and should be resizing them today.

I'm horrified that I let it go out with all those spelling and grammar mistakes as my spelling is normally very good

It has taken months to get this far due to the resistance from the committee. They don't want dates published in public, don't want photographs! Despite shrinking memberships and an average age of about 60, they seem quite happy to stand in the shadows and let the club vanish.

Mike357, You have my greatest sympathy!

As you might gather from my previous posting I believe that this attitude is one of the greater threats to the sport.
Our sport is too often seen as something hidden, secretive and unwholesome, and ignorance like that breeds fear, which in turn causes opposition to the sport.

If we are open (well, as open as the rules. regulations and laws permit) then we help to banish that ignorance and all that flows from it.

Our Websites have given us this opportunity.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

The club I'm currently chairman of has gone from less than 50 to over 90 members in the past 2 1/2 years, with a lot of the new members being youngsters with their first time shooter parents. We have currently had to stop taking new members for a few months to give our stallwarts who see them through their probationary period a chance to shoot again.

There are people out there who want to try shooting but don't know how to do it, being of later generations the internet will no doubt be their first if not only port of call for information. Therefore if they can find a place that is local to them on the net then they will contact. So for me a net presence is a must if clubs aspire to grow or just maintain their membership.

I don't understand why clubs don't advertise. In Australia you can open the Yellow Pages and find your nearest club http://www.yellowpages.com.au/search/li ... &x=28&y=19

Here it doesn't seem to happen. It took me about 3 months to find the Miniture Rifle Club in Elgin, when I ask why they didn't advertise, the Secretary looked sheepish and mumbled something about it not being the done thing! :evil:

I can't remember exactly how I found Strathpeffer R & P Club but it wasn't as straight forward as looking it up.

That is the way with everything shooting, ovenpaa and I were stuggling for info and equipment when we first started out.
That is why I think it is so important that we as shooters and forum members (any forum) list good deals and club info and whatever else that will make life a tad easier for beginners.
