Whittington Volunteer

#1 Post by meles meles »

We had a crackin' morning shooting at Whittington (Staffordshire) today, oomans. Most of the time we were shooting our Goblinator (TM), a nice, teak stocked AIA carbine which is effectively a no 5 junglie but chambered in 7.62x39. Popped a Kalshnikov 30 round mag azine on it and fired it from the standing unsupported position, grouping to about 5 inches. Plenty enough to keep Farmer Giles at a distance...

The other rifle we shot was a fellow club member's reproduction 2 band Volunteer black powder rifle in .451. Boy, was that fun ! A nice flash, a gentle shove in the shoulder, a huge cloud of smoke - sometimes including a perfectly formed smoke ring drifting downrange in the still air - the sweet smell of salpetre, then a resounding crunch as the big cast boolit clunked into the backstop.

We now like black powder rifles, do us.

Sounds like a good mornings shooting - Any pictures?

We're not asking for springwatch badger-cam...just a pic of the range would be nice... razz

'Twas a superbulous morning's shooting, Squirrel. We were far to busy to get the Box Brownies out. Those black powder gins are fun...

I shoot one of the early PH hexangonal rifled 0.451" volunteers, very accurate.

Yes, we found it very pleasant to shoot, and far exceeded our expectations for accuracy. It's the first black powder rifle we have used and it probably won't be the last :)

My club has its first BP pistol and rifle day booked at Bisley, should be a grin. The only BP stuff I have shot is my old 10 bore shotgun.

What is your load for this, the reason I ask is that a new member in the club has one and wants to use it but does not have a clue were to start
Thanks

86 grains Swiss No4 under a 540 grain paper patch boolit serves me well out to 800 yrds.

if you are not shooting at the longer ranges then 60 grains would be a good starting point with a 500 grain plus boolit.
