Glasses for shooting

I am sure this has been done before but things change!
My eye sight started to deteriorate when I hit the fifties so I feel that wasnt too bad.
Now just hit 58 and I am really struggling to see the foresight on my full bore rifles.
The target is ok-ish as is the rear sight.
The lighting and contrast around the target makes a big difference too as to what I can see.
What recommendations would you spec wearers make?
Cheers,
Tony

There's all manner of prescription shooting glasses out there, but to tell you the truth, if it's fore sight focusing that's the issue, try some off the shelf reading glasses from Boots or the like....

Or, scoped rifles?!

Go see a specialist optician and get a lens and frames optimised for the job. When I got my first one Steward's at Bisley said that my eyesight was pretty good but that they could help a bit. When they gave me the recommended lens, my first reaction was "So that's what it is supposed to look like!"

The director and optometrist at Newbury Specsavers (not a million miles from you) is run by a shooter of some repute (Ireland, GB Captain etc). Call and ask for an appointment with Gary. He usually recommends a double appointment (mainly because shooters tend to jaw a bit, as much as wanting more detail and info than the average punter).

Gets my vote too, nice chap, very helpful. Hadn't realised he was quite that exalted a figure in the world of shooting though! I've now got, but not yet had a chance to use, a set of Champion specs with a very small lens (compared to glasses) which gives an amazingly clear view.

Contact Mr Steward http://www.stewardsportsglasses.co.uk/contactus.htm & send in the relevant eye high street prescription he will convert that to a suitable dioptre to allow you to focus on the foresight & have some depth of field down range. Dont use reading glasses they will only focus the foresight & not distance. Stewards will do a lens for ~£50 & you can fit it in a rubber eye cup to fit ona rear sight to test & get used to it then consider shooting glasses.

He also like you to take your rifle (into his high street shop!) so that he can precisely determine your pupil - lens - sight alignment. Highly recommended.

I recently used these people for a replacement lens for my Champion glasses; very fast service and cheaper than Stewards of Bisley.
