Hi all

Due for surgery on my neck in 2 weeks, basically disc removal and vertebrae fusing in about the worst place possible for a shooter. Just wondered if anyone had any knowledge or experience of recoil pads, gel vs foam, thickness, effectiveness etc. In addition to shooting anything brought to the range by others, I shoot a variety of my own rifles from the bench including .22 RF / .308 / .284 / 7.5x54 / .30-06 and .303. Tried speaking to several dealers at the show today but generally received a p*** poor response, mostly being just blank looks.

With 3 - 12 months of recovery anything I can do to improve things in my favour will be a bonus........

Ouch, hope everything goes smoothly.

Christel used to shoot with a Sorbothane pad which she said made a huge difference to perceived recoil with service rifles so that would be a good start. Her pad was probably 6,0mm thick and I tried it the once and was very impressed.

Thanks for that, had a quick look - I assume it was one of the slip on type neoprene pads with sorbothane inserts? Ill have a proper web search tomorrow and try to find a uk source.

I'll find you a link for the type I had...it really made a difference.

I have a back problem and use a past recoil pad.

It does absorb the 'punch' of the recoil and I feel nothing at the shoulder, but I still suffer from a full days shooting because although softened, the recoil does move my (fairly considerable) bulk.

I refused the 'fusing' operation (cracked vertebrae rather than disc) so you may well not suffer from the same effect. I hope not and I do hope it goes well for you.

I offered to do the op myself, i reckon a hammer, chisel and some inch and half no 8's would do the trick but Glenn declined for some reason wtfwtf

Here is what I use -

You know those military ammo tins with 900 5.56 rounds ? Inside you will find a few pieces of foam in a very dark grey colour.

The guys in the military have been using them for ages in customising smocks with elbow bads and shoulder pads etc

Simply wrap in a matching fabric to your garment and sew on in the right place.

It also makes a great pad for your stock if you need to raise your head position.

Best of luck with the surgery, I have a shoulder problem that reared its ugly head recently, the result of a motorcycle accident many years ago.
I purchased a Past, `Mag Plus` Recoil pad and it has made a huge difference. The pad is 1/2" thick and makes shooting my full bore rifles a pleasant experience again.

Same from me get at least a Magnum Past really cuts recoil and speaking from experience.

For those of you who know Alan, would you trust him anywhere near you with even a sticking plaster????? I still intend to have him medicated, I have decided on the dose and type of antipsychotic, just need regular access to his cups of tea for covert administration. Maybe Debs, his new flame, can oblige.....
