Seems usable laser based defence systems are just around the corner.

"The high-energy laser system was used to cut through a 15mm-thick steel girder, and to shoot out of the air a steel ball designed to mimic a mortar round."

Hmmm, and anything plated in reflective material, especially copper, would be virtually immune...

Still though its a working Laser system that doesn't have to be mounted in a 747.

Thats what i was thinking, lasers aren't covered by any firearms legislation are they? Would be handy for rush hour traffic jams

you couldn't zero it on military ranges because the speed of light slightly exceeds the 3275 fps velocity limit but it strikes me that it would have 0 ft/lbs or joules energy so defo not HME?

Woo-Hoo, finally. A working lascannon.

As much as I like the bullet, the sci-fi nerd in me does fancy a direct-energy "firearm".

I can see these being mounted on warships and used in "goal keeper" roles.

It'll be a long time before NATO soliders are running around with shoulder-fired lasguns, then. And even if we had the tech, would there be a benefit?

However, as the Badger says, they'll always be someone who counters any improvement.

Polishing won't work .. Nor will rotating the target being lazed .. A ballerina could pirouette infront of buckshot and it would do as much good .. The transfer of energy is just too great ..
If you hit anything carrying anything volotile it would explode .. Even anything with a water content is gonna explode ..
Scary stuff !!

There is an MoD policy document on using lasers on ranges. It's one of the volumes of JSP 403 - I'd google it and post a link myself but I'm about to go to bed!
