I've no idea where you live and what impression you have of living in the UK but you are mistaken I'm afraid. You are inventing such a threat for other reasons I suspect. Tell us what they are if you wish.

Guns may well be an emotive issue here but shooting, legitimate shooting, generally isn't. As I say - 'antis' as you refer to them are largely a political obsession for the likes of people who frequent forums similar to this one and may wish to chew the cud.

From a field shooting, target shooting, game shooting or generally any other type of shooting perspective here in the UK what you refer to as 'the 'anti' is not a real issue.

The whole damn issue is politics and political. You say that legitimate shooting isn't an issue, yet how many times have we read on here about the police turning up when some man or woman has been going about their legitimate sport of hunting because someone heard shooting, not an emotive issue, yeah right you are :roll:

Any impression I have of living in the UK is gained through being a British citizen but now sensibly living abroad.

Work it out, if I have to explain it to you then you're even more naive on this subject than I first thought you were.

That said best if you and I agree to disagree because to be honest, I haven't much time for sportsmen such as yourself. Enjoy your shooting (while it lasts).

And that my friend is the problem right there, you treat people like her as irrelevant. It it wasn't for people like me old son your head would still be stuck firmly in the sand while people like her chip away at your sport. Here's a little light reading from the GCN website, as you say "irrelevant"

OUR MISSION

The Gun Control Network was established to campaign for tighter controls on guns of all kinds and a greater awareness of the dangers associated with gun ownership and use.

All our activities and objectives are predicated on the belief that the interests of public safety demand a reduction in the availability and attractiveness of firearms of all kinds. No reasonable person doubts the fundamental connection between the number of guns there are in a society and the prevalence of gun homicide, suicide and accident.

Almost all guns start out legal and there is no clear demarcation between legal and illegal weapons. Therefore what is needed is legislation to control the availability of legal weapons and law enforcement to control the illegal ones.

BACKGROUND

The Gun Control Network was established as a small non-profit making organisation in July 1996 in the aftermath of the Dunblane tragedy. The founders included lawyers, academics and the parents of victims killed in Dunblane and Hungerford. It was the first gun control organisation in the UK.

At the time, in 1987, of the massacre by Michael Ryan of 16 people in Hungerford there was no UK organisation campaigning for tighter gun laws and the shooting lobby succeeded in watering down much of the proposed new firearms legislation. After the tragedy in Dunblane in 1996, when Thomas Hamilton gunned down 16 children and their teacher in the school gym, we were determined to ensure that the same thing didn’t happen again. The public demanded real change in the gun laws and they got it. We now have a complete ban on handguns in this country and some of the strictest gun laws in the world. This dramatic achievement, and others are outlined in the Achievements menu.

We are proud of these achievements but we are not complacent. The shooting lobby is rich and powerful and determined to see the handgun ban reversed. They will always oppose further restrictions on guns and will fight to get their handguns back. They exert perpetual pressure to increase gun ownership and are particularly concerned to ensure that the next generation of shooters is on stream.

GCN is the one of the few countervailing forces against the gun lobby in the UK. We will continue to work for a safer society where there are fewer guns and less gun violence. There is still much to be done and our objectives are outlined in the Objectives menu.

GCN campaigns for its objectives in a variety of ways (see Strategy). In particular we will work with gun control groups around the world and will disseminate information and research data about guns in the UK and elsewhere (see Facts and Research).

As with most voluntary organisations we are permanently in need of funds. We run a part time office and depend upon grants and donations to keep it going (see Donations).

We also need people actively to promote gun control and keep the issue in the public domain. We are particularly concerned to keep the politicians informed about the issue and to urge the government to include further gun legislation in their manifesto for the next election (see What you can do). Neil, I'm an active GR shooter that was lucky enough to briefly shoot pistols before the ban. Many of my club shooters and those of us that shoot at national level would happily go back to pistols as opposed to Marlins and Rugers. Myself, CormieAckImp and Lyons have even travelled elsewhere to shoot pistols.

Yeah yeah - why? I dunnow....

Maybe coz I see the same old stuff just repeating itself every 2-3 years (online petitions etc). :-(

Maybe coz I just see political nativity in its daftest form - thinking on-line petitions will actually convince anyone of anything.

Maybe coz this stuff distracts from what we need to be doing. 100,000 people clicking links or 100,000 people shooting every week. What will make a difference?

Maybe coz I'm just sick and tired of people moaning and winging about the same old stuff over and over and over again (for the last 15 years). Jeeze - get over it - go shooting with stuff you can do for god's sake.

Maybe coz I see people reverting to type and reinforcing the very stereotype that the UK public think we are and want us NOT to have guns!

And so on..... You know - if I was a member of the GCN (whoever they actually are) and I wanted to promote my cause I'd simply point people to forums like this - there are loads of them.

The saddest thing is >50% of people posting here don't think they are actually part of the problem - and thats the bloody problem :-(
