That was not the reason why... It was to stop them potentially being taken and used by terrorists.

The same logic if accepted could of course be applied to banning any such item - a real dangerous precedent.

Yes I know, I was just being sarcastic. But Joe public wont know that, they will just want 'guns' banned and the government has an ideal opportunity.

We are pretty much stuck with rumours at the moment, what I have teased out and as others have alluded to the response was far larger than the Home Office were expecting. Because they snuck it onto some other legislation and assumed they would only be affecting a small part of shooting they thought at most they would get a few hundred replies. They have instead had thousands of replies largely negative about the idea and a very comprehensive response from all the shooting organisations from the .50 cal shooters association through to the Muzzle Loaders and everybody in-between.

The costings provided by the Home Office have been heavily challenged and a fair few unforeseen issues raised for example MARS and Lever action type rifles are not the only type that automatically eject a case, the authorities appear to have completely overlooked the large number of often very expensive side by side hunting rifles that have auto ejectors like a shotgun. The definitions used to justify a .50cal ban have been heavily challenged by all parties with HME type hunting rifles and large bore Black powder rifles being thrown into the mix.

So they are left with a very complex mess of issues to deal with, they might decide to do a Scottish Government and ignore all that but the ticking time bomb that is the Brexit process is draining the life out of all White Hall and Government activities for the moment.

The further phone consultation is a clear sign to me of some form of face saving exercise kicking in.

The 50cal association have also used a very effective method of challenging the proposals, rather than just saying "WAAAAH DON'T BAN MY TOYS" have instead methodically pointed out every factual and technical mistake in the proposals as well as putting practical solutions to deal with any concerns. That method of responding to this kind of consultation process which they and other shooting organisations are starting to use as a tactic is a very effective way to grind this kind of thing to a stop.

I hope that the same approach works on the doctors fees issue.

The cynic in me thinks about the fact that so many are dying from stabbings and now shootings in London that the temptation must be make a grand slam statement - the "something has to be done" approach. You can bury a few sins under the need for public protection.

I'd be interested to know how many of those young people killed in London (some fifty odd) in this quarter of the year had some form of gang connection / contact. Or is that too culturally insensitive to ask?

As ever I fail to see any connection with legitimate firearms owners - not that that will prevent the police, Home, Office, and politicians from pointing to our firearms laws and proclaiming them a success in defiance of illegally held firearms crimes.

And what I'd really like to know (but am pretty sure we won't be told) is just how many of these recent stabbings have been committed with these "certain weapons".
