I wonder if anyone will be using these for CSR..

I'm still in two mind. £1k for a sorted Vz, or £1.8k for a well sorted AR.

The only things from an AK you can use in your vZ-58 are the ammunition, the magazine pouches and the cleaning kit.

The magazines are typically manufactured from aluminium, lighter and with a built-in bolt hold-open.

My Slovak friends love their vZ-58's.
Inferior AK ?

Why is it inferior ?

Is the VZ58 more reliable ? Or maybe more accurate ?

As I understand it, the AK fulfils the requirements of a 300 yard battle rifle very well ?

I have shot the AK47 and the Vz58 extensively. Most of the shooting as been done as "dynamic" shooting between 10 to 100 metres . There are very similar and I love both even if I tend to prefer the Vz58 as the Vz58 bolt stays open on last round & I also prefer the safety/selector on the Vz.

The 58 does have a reputation as being of better build quality (less agricultural) I will happily do a side by side comparison bangbang when I receive my 58. My AK is a fine rifle that does all it sets out to do. I cant fault either.

The VZ58 might well have better build quality but I don't see how that makes it a superior assault rifle when compared to the AK.

In fact to lump all AKs together ( as Lapua 338 has ) is a bit unfair in itself when you consider that some were stamped receivers and some were milled. And they were produced by some very different factories.

If you handle an East German AK or even a late model Chinese one, as I have, their build quality is better than many other countries AK.

It just seems incredibly arrogant to claim that the AK is "inferior" when it has proven to be pretty much PERFECT at what it was designed for !

As to build quality - it is the slightly loose tolerances which lend the AK the incredible reliability it has. I would be interested in seeing the VZ undergoing the punishing tests that the AK has survived !!

I agree I have handled some very nicely put together AKs, you make some valid points. If you can make it to Severnside the next time I head that way you will be more than welcome to shoot both my AK and my vZ. As mentioned I really like my AK and consider it a fine rifle. Just a shame it has to have the gas system neutered to comply with the law in this country. The vz for me was an obvious choice to make as I could get it setup as I want for less than a comparable AR.

AK47 vs Vz58

They are both perfect at what they were designed for, ie : dropping a 2 legged target at distance between 5 to 200 meters, bearing in mind that it is estimated (cant rember the precise figures) that in European warfare something like 90 % of engagements would take place between 30 to 70 meters.

now going back to the contenders :

the AK47 does looks "kick-ass",
the AK47 is gorgeous,
the bad boys use AK47,
AK47 is best friend of oppressed proletarian masses
AK47 is work-of-art of great comrad Mikhail Kalashnikov,
your mate knows about AK, he does not about Vz,
(but you can tell that bird at the bar you shoot AK even if it is really only a Vz)
the Vz is deemed capable of better accuracy,
the Vz same weight as the AKM but lighter than the AK,
the Vz mags are lighter,
the Vz has a holt open (so does the serbian AK),
Personal taste but I find the safety/selector far more ergonomic & practical on the Vz,
From personal experience, a W-E Vz class will easily go through close to 10K of ammo whithout any malfunctions,
the AK is a mythical weapon with proven track record in the field,
the VZ is not a mythical weapon but has proven its worth in African & South-Ast Asian conflicts and more recently the Czech forces in Astan reported full satisfaction,

On the European Mkt, a Semi-Auto AK47 costs minimum € 600 but often more as a Vz a mere € 350. Now, except the look & myth element I can not see what justifies the price difference ?
As a civilian shooter for the price I'd go for the Vz while I fully appreciate that a AK47 user will find spare-parts & mags all over the world.

Its a shame, but I doubt it.

They appear to be the new firearm of choice for Tier 1 Special Ops Snipers.....who can't attend CSR matches for OPSEC reasons.
