Moving the query along a bit, what are people's experiences on different club rules on loaded magazines when you get to the range?

I've seen RO's that insist that removable magazines be checked empty at the same time as the guns, before people go forward to change the targets. Others regard magazines as just ammo boxes and as long as they aren't in the gun, it matters not what's in them.

And what about filling detached magazines while other shooters are forward changing targets?

We show empty mags when going forward and changing targets, full mags go in the back pocket away from the gun.

Different ranges and clubs will have their own 'local' rules that need to be followed, the RCO will be the one to enforce those rules.
If the RCO has his own procedures for you to follow then you should do so and if the shooters don't like it they can get the RCO replaced. He is the one responsible for the running of the range and will run it in his own way.
Only if his way is detrimental to safety should it be contested on the range. If it is just an annoyance to the shooters then the place for arguments is away from the point and at the next range day's organising (or committee) stage.

I believe the NSRA will turn you away from an event if you arrive with loaded magazines?

The local NSRA club run range we use tried to insist that 22 magazines (10/22 etc) were only to be loaded on the FP after the red light for the start of shooting? so I insisted they do the same with little wooden bullet blocks & 22 plastic ammo cases ;-) only open your eley boxes on the FP & load them after the red light to carry on................ they dropped the stupid 'rule'.

the only rule we enforce is at the end of shooting the mag is removed placed down & that no firearms are handled when people are forward of the FP changing targets, the RCO stays behind to make sure that is so. So you could have a part loaded mag on the table but not in a gun. Other than that, the usual safety applies: empty gun, open or removed action either by clearing it with another shooter (concealed breach / chamber say a Ruger or 94.22 winchester) or by breach flag/bolt removed depending on type (bolt action rifle etc).

Its depressing how many clubs make up petty 'rules' that come from no legal act or requirement, they just make shooters lives harder.

That would be in keeping with their anti gun policy.

As someone relatively new to shooting and after reading this thread am I right in saying it is NOT illegal to carry loaded magazines to / from the range or in your car as it does not constitute a loaded firearm?

As I said in a previous post along with others.

"In answer to the OP's original question, yes it is perfectly legal to transport ammunition in detachable magazines separate from the rifle."

Typical internet where myth, fantasy, fiction, misinformation and downright lies are greater than facts, truth and knowledge by at least 100-1!

It's worth repeating AGAIN that if in doubt, the best route is a call to the licensing dept and a written statement from them confirming the answer to your legal query.

If it's not important or a bit theoretical or not out of the ordinary or you want to end up both more confused and more amused, then an 8 page thread on here is the way to go.
