Just recieved word from BASC
As I said in my previous email there has been a great deal of discussion on this matter. I have just received a response from the BASC firearms department as follows.

Please note that the Home Office has made it clear today that no such re-classification has taken place. This is not surprising as no legislation amendments have come through parliament. This rumour appears to have grown out of a discussion at a local police liaison meeting earlier this year where a dealer/deer consultant raised an issue that he had no legal understanding of. On average this subject raises itself about every 2 years in one form or another! It has been confirmed that certain enquiry officers are also fuelling the myth with their bigoted opinions. The forums have also been active.

In essence the law has not changed and the words “designed to expand on impact” still exists as the measure for between prohibited (expanding) and match bullets. Regardless of the fact Hornady match bullets look identical to their expanding ones, that US companies also advocate the use of match bullets on vermin (as well as those specifically designed to expand on impact) and that any bullet will expand or fragment to some degree ….. it is the manufacturers “design” that counts in UK law as to whether a bullet is classified as prohibited or not.
Panic over. :goodjob:

Today (11/10/11) I contacted the Home Office department which deals with firearms licensing.

THEY HAVE NOT RE-CLASSIFIED A MAX BULLETS AS "EXPANDING."

This appears to be a rumour springing from the Devon & Cornwall liaison meeting in March of this year - PLEASE READ IT.

Perhaps some sense after all.....

I was a little surprised by the email that Sandgroper posted from the BASC that all is normal as no legislation has been passed....

Does the VCR Act not give the Home Secretary the power to ban whatever he/she deems as exceptionally dangerous without recourse through the House?

I still reckon we should "tar and feather" Squires, though!!!!!   :55:
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

The power requires a regulation or order - not a law - to be passed, which is still subject to scrutiny, and would be open to consultation etc beforehand.

Laurie wrote:As of today, the Home Office has reclassified the AMAX design as 'expanding' across the board making it an offence to sell, own, or use any such or ammunition loaded with such unless the shooter's FAC authorises purchase / holding / use of expanding bullets and ammunition. RFDs and rifle clubs are being advised of the change of status. No compensation will be paid to anybody affected.

The importer is likely to make a legal challenge against the decision, but even if that is done, considerable time will likely pass before a legal ruling and clarification are obtained.

Further comment is pretty superfluous!
Laurie - so much for your further comment is pretty superfluous - as without further comment we would not have got to the fact that this is all bollox!

NRA shoots us in the foot again!!!

Well, if it wasn't banned before, I bet it will be now!

JEEEEZE!!!!

As I said at the beginning:

Apparently the Home Office have just re-classified these as expanding due to the Hornady site saying that somewhere.

Just to let you know that the NRA are on the case already although we haven't received official notification yet - hence why it's here and not under NRA!

Wasn't the NRA saying it, it was me following a conversation. Now you see why I don't post stuff that I hear when at work.

well said! (and I'm not an NRA member) I've followed this on several forums, and have seen people making statements as if they were fact, it turns out that they were wrong, I have seen nothing from BASC or NRA that supported the rumour, only acknowledgement that the rumour existed.hopefully this will now be sorted out, maybe even get the law changed to remove this stupid requirement to have expanding as a separate condition.

PS I will still take any free filthy AMax's of you target people :P

I have received 4 mails from the F Class Association on this a well, they also reported they were no longer to be used in competitions effective immediate and Mik has since mailed us all again saying panic over carry on as normal. Rumour mongering or not it has been buzzing around from different sources these last couple of days.
