It used to be the case that the VMax had the cavity behind the polymer tip, the AMax didn't, thus setting up different expansion characteristics.

It may be worth re-stating that such is the explosive fragmentation of the VMax makes it less than wholly suitable to deer penetration of thicker skinned species or meat species.

At the end of the day its down to whether one can show from the manufacturer's literature that A max was designed to be a target bullet.

Valid point about literature and intended use.

Americans like shooting most things with hair on its back and varminting is big sport.
Most small varminting type animals will expire / evaporate if pretty much anything hits it - hence expansion may also be swopped with the word "splatter".

Looking at the design of V-Max and A-Max their are fundamental differences in design and application.
To use the car analogy - they may look the same on outside but the Engine Size and Fuel type will determine what road tax you pay (oops can see a Road Tax Thread sprouting off this one)

A wise old shooter once said "A flying turd at 5000 fps will also hurt / kill something" :lol:

As soon as Hornady realise their sales of A Max are dropping in uk the literature will be reviewed.

I don't think that the very small quantity that they sell in the U.K. (by comparison to the U.S.) will make any difference at all Robin.

It's interesting to note that several people from different websites have sectioned various bullets made by Hornady and they all seem to have posted quite different results with one chap indicating no visible difference between V-Max and A-Max and another noting a significant difference.

I don't think Hornady would be selling them in the UK if they weren't profitable, Chapuis.

Maybe they are not so profitable as the new Hornady match bullets are no longer polymer tipped.

Hornady's sales in the U.K. are a mere fraction of sales in the U.S. I very much doubt that we even register with them.
One Cabelas shop probably sells a far larger quantity of Hornady products in a year than the combined sales of all outlets in the U.K.

Absolutely!

Sadly this will apply to most if not all of the American manufacturers, we are not even a blip on the horizon.
