That sounds a lot more reasonable and in line with FAC fees. Honestly, if you can't stump up thirty quid for a ticket, you're not going to be able to get much of an air rifle.

What's wrong with making sure someone with a deadly weapon is fit to hold it and has somewhere appropriate to use it? And what is qualitatively different about an air .22 as opposed to a rimfire that means it shouldn't be subject to the same controls?
Deadly weapon? FFS. It's a 12 ft/lb air rifle. It's just about capable of killing. Just about. Hell - it's only just about man enough for a rabbit.

Licensing is daft and achieves nothing - people misusing air guns already break the law - enforce what is there!

But the SNP are utter, nasty morons, a party that would remove freedom from all for their own bullshit agenda, so it's to be expected from them.

Even at 12lb.ft it's significantly more than most air rifles, the majority are probably in the 8-10lb.ft range.

Don't forget where part of the push from the SNP comes from:

Addict who killed boy, 2, with air gun jailed for life
By Auslan Cramb, Scottish Correspondent12:01AM BST 31 Aug 2005
A man who murdered a two-year-old boy by shooting him in the head with an air rifle was jailed for life yesterday.
Mark Bonini, a drug addict, was ordered to serve a minimum of 13 years.
Bonini, 27, who was taking pot shots from the window of his flat, became the first person in Britain to be convicted of murder using an air gun.
Andrew Morton, who died with an air rifle pellet embedded in his brain, was in the arms of his older brother watching fire engines when he was struck.
Bonini, who was found guilty three weeks ago, also shot at a woman shopper and a taxi driver.

And DONT FORGET the heavy SNP involvement & spin on the above case:
Bonini wasn't an addict, he was a dealer....for the Morton parents...
and
the airgun used to shoot Andrew Morton previously been owned by the Morton's but was given to Bonini as payment for drug debts
and
a considerable amount of SNP funds were spent on the Morton's so they looked more meedja friendly & fit the poor-honest-grieving-family profile

IF the Mortons had not been into illegal drugs chances are little Andrew would still be alive

Very sad, but for someone like this, if he hadn't killed someone with an air rifle, it was just a matter of time before he used a car, baseball bat, kitchen knife or a bottle to kill someone. You can't legislate against this mindset, he clearly needed psychiatric help and locked away for both his and our protection.

I don't disagree with anything you've said, but my point was aimed at:

'Deadly weapon? FFS. It's a 12 ft/lb air rifle. It's just about capable of killing. Just about. Hell - it's only just about man enough for a rabbit.'

Which was sadly not true in the case above.

To correct the units 12 ft.lb or 12 lb.ft

List of things that can't kill a 2 year old given the right circumstances........

In either case, would a licencing scheme have stopped this? No. Would his sentence be heavier? No. Would the kid's parents be prosecuted for owning the air rifle? Depends who needs the spin most.

Behind all this pi$h is that idiot Kenny Macaskill....

Image

Listening him talk I seriously think he has brain damage, remember when you were growing up? There was always one guy in the street that, for the want of a better description, was a Banana short of a Picnic Basket.

How on earth did he achieve such a powerful position?

A quick search reveals that he was arrested for being drunk at a football match...Story...

He released the Lockerbie Bomber saying " Mr Al Megrahi now faces a sentence imposed by a higher power." Story...

He defends ex Lord Advocate Angiolini’s failure to prosecute 14 lawyers accused of legal aid fraud Story...

He tried to abolish corroboration in Scotland. Story...

Even his colleagues think he's a numpty..Lord McCluskey says Kenny MacAskill's conduct is 'unsuitable' for a Justice Minister...

This man has to go....
