Well oomans, we took our P14 and our 1916 SMLE out this morning and used them to release some canned bangs back into the wild. It was a glorious day, the sun was shining and there was not hint of a breeze - the red flag was hanging as limp as Dromia's appendage :lol:

Our warming shot was 2 inches high at 11 o'clock, about 3 inches left of the bull.

We then fired 3 rounds for a group and had a tight, almost touching, string in a vertical line, level with the bull and 3 inches left of it. A clever ooman drifted the foresight for us and we prepared to liberate 3 more bangs.

This second group was 2 inches left of the bull, on a level with it. It was a vertical string with the holes almost but not quite touching. The foresight was drifted a little more.

Our third group was 1 inch left of the bull, again on a level with it. The rounds had strung vertically again, each successive shot being about 1/8th inch higher than the previous and directly above it.

So, oomans, we're assuming that drifting the foresight a tad more will bring us spot on into the centre of the bull. The group will be about half an inch, vertically strung we expect. What could be causing the vertical stringing? We're shooting Privi .303 factory bangs over iron sights.

We've tried to add a picture for you, but the software whined even more than does some of the oomans when we don't attach a picture. Apparently our picture is far too high quality to upload....

Right oomans, we've popped it on a hot wash and spin dried it: it should have shrunk enough to upload now...

Well it sound like it likes Privi, as those are reasonable groups

On one of my rifles I now longer have (Enfield conversion), I used to find that the second shot was always about half a minute higher than the first; then subsequent shots would continue to creep up, until it stabalised on shot 5/6....

...I've always assumed that it is the effect of the barrel and chamber warming up, and so increasing the pressure slightly - the magnitude of the effect will depend on the rifle, ammo and outside temperature...and it's just a matter of learning how each combination affects the first few shots, so that you can adjust accordingly....
