So someone needs a firearm to kill dozens of people. The twin towers were brought down by terrorist with box cutters. People were killed in Boston by a homemade bomb. People were killed in Oklahoma by a homemade bomb. A pilot flew his plane into the ground killing 150 people. etc etc. You don't need firearms to kill people, you are falling for the anti gun propaganda. Follow your logic and ban all firearms in the UK and it will help prevent people being murdered, except for those that are killed by knives, and the other numerous ways people are murdered. And of course those murdered by people with illegal firearms.
It's absolutely true that he could go out and try to do the same with a knife or his fists but both of those are less dangerous than an assault rifle. If I'm unarmed I'm much more likely to fancy my chances against one man with a knife or his fists because all I really need to do is pin him down and control his weapon hand
What about if he had a pump action shotgun, or a 10/22 semi / auto rifle. Both easy to get legally in the UK.
You are taking what I'm saying beyond my intentions. All I'm saying is that easier access to guns for everyone = easier access to guns for the insane too and sometimes that has very negative consequences. That's a pretty simple, self evident statement that is surely hard to disagree with.
And for the record, I don't believe weapons should be banned, but well regulated. Whether the UK's regulations are overly restrictive is up for debate and in my opinion probably true. Some users here have tried to tell me that 'there are huge numbers of regulations on weapons in the USA' but let's be honest, in comparison to places like the UK it's still MUCH easier to get a weapon over there than it is here. I honestly believe that if it was as difficult to get your hands on a firearm in the USA as it is in the UK, there would be fewer deaths every year.
However, I do agree that this wouldn't make murder impossible and of course it wouldn't banish it from society as a whole, since as you pointed out there are murders with all kinds of non firearm weapons. But it would curtail one of the major routes that people take in crimes of passion etc.
So to be clear, I'm of the opinion that weapons should be fairly hard to get your hands on and only after a decent amount of criminal records and medical history checks. I'm not advocating for an outright ban. I'm an avid shooter and believe in the value of the shooting sports for law abiding people.
