While it may be fashionable to knock them I say speak as you find. I went into Fultons a few years back looking for a butt pad to fit a BSA monarch. They didn't have anything new that was suitable but gave me an old one that would fit. They simply suggested that I put a donation in the charity box.

If the end product doesn't have to be a spitting image of a #4 (T) going the more modern route will give you better results. Current production scopes are a lot brighter than the optics of 65 years ago.

I've read good things about the reproduction #32 scope but it is pretty pricey. You can buy a variable power scope equal or better in performance for less money and with a lifetime warranty.





Mine is a basic Long Branch #4 with and S&K instamount and a repro cheekpiece. The scope is a cheap Bushnell 6x. Accuracy is great. I've had this set up for decades and it continues to serve me well.

...We're definitely going to start with a modern scope; but were thinking, like yourself, of keeping it simple and going for a fixed magnification scope...

...are there any advantages to fixed magnification? (question to anyone...)

I won't say that Fultons can't be pricey, but they have done some good work and adjustments to some of my rifles - All the front woodwork broke up (due to something a previous owner did) on my SMLE - I think they charged £80 (a couple of years ago) to supply and fit the furniture...it was a really nice job; and although I could have done it myself for half (but probably not as well) I thought it was a reasonable fee.
