The problem with all reporting is that it is done by scumbag journalists so has no factual value at all.
Now I know that is a sweeping generalisation and there will be examples of where that is not true but they are so few and far between as to make no difference to my statement.

I've known a few authors because of a previous hobby and they are people just like you and I who decided to write a book. As you've said, just because it's in print doesn't make it correct.

Do some research and then make your mind up.

The problem with the gun trade is there are too many miserable old buggers who'd rather throw their wares off a cliff than admit times have changed.
